III. PROCEDURE:
A. Reviewing of Previous Lesson or Presenting the New Lesson
As a review about speech writing, identify the terms pertained in the items below. The first letter
of the word is indicated to serve as a clue.
P 1. This term pertains to whether you intend to inform, entertain, inform
your audience or readers.
O 2. It presents the basic points of your speech. This guide can be written
as topics or sentences.
E 3. It is a type of speech delivered by the best man or bridesmaid during
weddings.
P 4. It is a type of speech that intends to sway the readers or audience to
follow what the speaker says.
F 5. The kind of language that is used generally in academic and business
writing.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

This time you are ready to present your speeches in front of an audience? A student's life is not
complete without one standing in front of the class, sharing things about his or her life, or giving
personal views or words of encouragement. Is it not? This scenario could be a moment of
concern, but mind you, it will be a beautiful experience. So, do not worry, you will be fine.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson

This lesson intends to present the essential points in speech delivery. Remember, the ones you
have written in your previous lessons are meant to be delivered. It is your ultimate goal for that
piece of work to be heard by an audience. One must keep this in mind to have a smooth
presentation. Delivering a speech is inevitable so let us boost that confidence in you by
beginning with the essential points.

Values Integration:

Are you familiar with this movie? This film is all about the life of then
soon- to – be King George VI, who was experiencing speech
impediment. Even though he is a royal, he does not have the
confidence to speak and stutters in front of people. Since he is
expected to ascend the throne, he was helped by a speech therapist
to overcome his weakness.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

Try watching CNN Philippines; what can you say about the news anchors? Do you understand
the words uttered by the reporters? One good thing about newscasters is their way of
enunciating words. The right enunciation of words is called articulation. Articulation is the
positioning of the speech structures. In the movie “The King’s Speech,” you might be wondering
why there is a need for a king to hire a speech therapist. It is because articulation involves the
movement of the organs of the body responsible for producing sound. If the parts of the body
responsible for the production of sounds are defective, a person cannot enunciate the words
correctly. The speech mechanisms are in the articulatory
system.

Face the mirror and say something. What have you noticed
with the movement of your mouth and lips?

Can you touch your adams apple? Try to produce the sound
of [s] and [z]. When do you feel the vibration?

What about when you are experiencing hoarseness of voice?

You might want to download from Playstore English Sounds Pronunciation-Learn
& Check by Nikolai Emelianov to see the articulatory system's movement when
sounds of letters are produced.

There are four stages of voice production: the breathing stage involves air passage from the
lungs through the trachea into the larynx. The phonation stage is when air is pushed through
the vocal cords, which then vibrates to produce a sound. Then, certain qualities are added to
the sounds as they pass through a series of air chambers in the throat and the head. This part
now the resonating stage. When the tone produced in the larynx is turned into specific
sounds, it reaches the articulation stage.

A specific part of the vocal tract is identified in the

articulation stage when consonant and vowel
sounds are produced. The vocal tract is the area
from the nose and the nasal cavity down to the
vocal cords deep in the throat. The main articulators
are lips, teeth, tongue, alveolar ridge, hard palate,
velum, or soft palate, uvula, pharynx, larynx, and
trachea.

Consonants, let us say, are described according to voicing, place of articulation, and manner of
articulation. First, consonants are produced through the constriction of airflow. When we
described consonants in terms of voicing, it means that it is either voiceless or voiced. In
voiceless sounds, air passes through open vocal folds like [p] while [b] is a voiced sound for air
passes through vibrating vocal folds. Next, the place of articulation pertains to the part where
the constriction of airflow takes place. To give you an idea, [p], [b], [m] are bilabial, for these
sounds are produced when both lips come together. While it is labiodental for [f] and [v] since
the upper teeth and lower teeth move together when the sounds are produced. Lastly, the
manner of articulation refers to how the airflow is constricted in the vocal tract. Some sounds
are produced from a complete constriction of airflow followed by a release of that air. These are
called stop sounds; examples of these are [p], [b], [t], [k], [d], and [g]. We also have nasal sounds,
wherein [m], [n], and [ŋ] are produced when the velum is lowered, allowing air to pass through
the nasal cavity.

Vowels, on the other hand, do not involve the constriction of airflow in the vocal tract. Vowel
sounds can be classified as monophthongs or diphthongs. Monopthongs are one-vowel quality
like pan, ban, and man. Diphthongs have a two-vowel quality such as ear, air, and four. Vowel
sounds are described according to height, backness, and roundness. Height is about how high
or low the tongue is in the mouth when producing the sound. Try to say [i] and [a]. What can you
say about the height of your tongue? [i] is a high vowel, while [a] is a low vowel. Backness refers
to how far front or back the tongue is. [i] is a front vowel, and [a] is a back vowel. Lastly,
roundedness refers to whether the lips are rounded or not when the sounds are produced. [u]
is a rounded vowel, whereas [i] is not.

Another concept to consider is Modulation. Modulation of voice is required in speech delivery.

If this gets to be compared in listening to a song, songs are not flat. It follows a tone, or else it
becomes just like a conversation. Speech to be effective must be audible for the audience, not
too loud, not too soft. However, some words need to be stressed for emphasis. At the same time,
as a speaker, you need to be mindful of your tone. This would also be your guide or basis in
choosing words appropriate for the occasion. Do you intend to be jovial or sympathetic, hopeful
or lonely?

Be mindful as well of your speaking rate. Others might be bored when you speak too slow, and
there is also a chance that listeners cannot understand you when you talk fast. Learn to pause
when necessary. The speaking rate is expressed in words per minute (wpm). You may record
yourself talking for a couple of minutes, total the number of words you have said and divide it by
the number of minutes your speech lasted.
Speaking rate (wpm) = total words / number of minutes

Average Speech Rates

√ Presentations: between 100 - 150 wpm for a comfortable pace
Conversational: between 120 - 150 wpm
Audiobooks: between 150 - 160 wpm, which is the upper range that people
comfortably hear and vocalize words
Radio hosts and podcasters: between 150 - 160 wpm
Auctioneers: can speak at about 250 wpm
Commentators: between 250- 400 wpm

E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #2

You might have also heard of the criterion ‘stage presence’ when watching singing competitions.
What is the meaning of that? Stage presence total of all the qualities that make your audience
engaged or interested while delivering a speech. These qualities include your words and your
gestures, movement, and posture. There are four spheres in stage presence. The first sphere
is appearance and comfort. Your attire must be appropriate for the event. Is the color of your
clothes suitable for the event? You also would like to wear something that you are comfortable
with. You would not want to be distracted or bothered with the shirt you keep on fixing. Body
posture and attitude is the second sphere. Make sure to stand straight since you would like to
look smart and relaxed. Avoid unnecessary hand gestures and get rid of mannerisms. The third
sphere is the tone of the speech. You would want to be an intelligible speaker. Remember your
speech is intended for your audience, and make sure that they can comprehend the things you
are saying. What do you think would be your approach for the topic you intend to convey. Should
you be humorous, serious, or direct? You would want to be creative in your choice of words to
communicate your intentions. The fourth sphere is the use of stage space. Remember to occupy
the parts of the stage when necessary. Since this part of the stage is closer to the audience, it
becomes their focus. The speaker can occupy the downstage center and center stage.

F. Developing Mastery
Finally, do not disregard the importance of nonverbal communication in your speech delivery.
Your listeners can readily read your thoughts or emotions through your facial expressions and
body movements. You cannot persuade your listeners to be optimistic if they can trace sadness
in your eyes. Nonverbal cues can also reinforce statements that you will say. What do you think
is the gesture for “Let’s do it!”? or when you want your audience to listen with their heart. You
are also allowed to use pictures or slide presentation for your discussion. There are instances
wherein you might need to show data or graphs to prove a point. Just make sure that these are
readable and free from errors. Most of all, do not forget to have eye contact with your audience.
Let your audience feel the sincerity in your words and your connection with them.

G. Finding Practical Application of Voncepts and Skills in Daily Living
Activity 1-WK 6.2
Since you have learned about the importance of nonverbal cues for your task, you will look
for pictures that you think will effectively represent the ideas below by capturing your
audience's attention.
1. Pandemic 2020
2. Faith
3. Life is a choice.
4. This, too, shall pass.
5. The wisdom of the old.

H. Making Generalization and Abstractions about the lesson

Activity 1-WK 6.3
What do you think is the meaning of the quotation written below? Explain in 3-5 sentences.

Eloquent speech is not from lip to ear but rather from heart to heart.

I. Evaluating Learning
Activity 1-WK 6.4
Below is the transcript of UN Women Goodwill Emma Watson's speech, which she delivered
during the HeForShe campaign in United Nations Headquarters, New York, last September 20,
2014. After reading, your task is to prepare a speech analysis using the given criteria. (45 points)

Today we are launching a campaign called “HeForShe.”

I am reaching out to you because I need your help. We want to end gender inequality—
and to do that we need everyone to be involved.

This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN: we want to try and galvanize as many men
and boys as possible to be advocates for gender equality. And we don’t just want to talk
about it, but make sure it is tangible.

I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the more I
have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-
hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.

For the record, feminism by definition is: “The belief that men and women should have
equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality
of the sexes.”

I started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight I was confused at being

called “bossy,” because I wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our parents—but
the boys were not.

When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press.

When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t
want to appear “muscly.”

When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings.

I decided I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research
has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.

Apparently I am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong, too
aggressive, isolating, anti-men and, unattractive.

Why is the word such an uncomfortable one?

Property of Pampanga High School – DepEd Division of City of San Fernando Pampanga Page | 39
I am from Britain and think it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male
counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I
think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of
my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly I
can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive
these rights.

No country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality.

These rights I consider to be human rights but I am one of the lucky ones. My life is a sheer
privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school
did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume I would go less far because
I might give birth to a child one day. These influencers were the gender equality
ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it, but they are the
inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today. And we need more of those.

And if you still hate the word—it is not the word that is important but the idea and the
ambition behind it. Because not all women have been afforded the same rights that I have.
In fact, statistically, very few have been.

In 1995, Hilary Clinton made a famous speech in Beijing about women’s rights. Sadly many
of the things she wanted to change are still a reality today.

But what stood out for me the most was that only 30 per cent of her audience were male.
How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to
participate in the conversation?

Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality
is your issue too.

Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society despite
my needing his presence as a child as much as my mother’s.

I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear it would
make them look less “macho”—in fact in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between
20-49 years of age; eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen
men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men
don’t have the benefits of equality either.

We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that
that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural
consequence.

If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted women won’t feel compelled
to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel
free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing
sets of ideals.

If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we
are—we can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. It’s about freedom.

I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from
prejudice but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too—
reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned and in doing so be a more true and
complete version of themselves.

Property of Pampanga High School – DepEd Division of City of San Fernando Pampanga Page | 40
You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl? And what is she doing up on stage at
the UN. It’s a good question and trust me, I have been asking myself the same thing. I don’t
know if I am qualified to be here. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to
make it better.

And having seen what I’ve seen—and given the chance—I feel it is my duty to say something.
English Statesman Edmund Burke said: “All that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph
is for enough good men and women to do nothing.”

In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt I’ve told myself firmly—if
not me, who, if not now, when. If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented
to you I hope those words might be helpful.

Because the reality is that if we do nothing it will take 75 years, or for me to be nearly a
hundred before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work. 15.5
million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children. And at current rates it won’t be
until 2086 before all rural African girls will be able to receive a secondary education.

If you believe in equality, you might be one of those inadvertent feminists I spoke of earlier.

And for this I applaud you.

We are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It
is called HeForShe. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to speak up, to be the "he"
for "she". And to ask yourself if not me, who? If not now, when?

Thank you.
