II. PROCEDURE:
Activity 1
In our previous discussion, we already passed the halfway point in our learning
competencies. Shifting and communication affect language forms, duration of interaction,
relationship of speaker roles and responsibilities of the speaker, the message and the delivery of
the intended message.
Questions:
What is your idea about the shifts in communication?
Is it possible to use a single communicative strategy from the beginning of the process until the
end?
Your lesson is all about the shift in communication, which affects language forms, duration
of interaction, relationship of speaker roles and responsibilities of the speaker, the message and
of course, the delivery of the intended message.
a. Can there only be one way of delivering the message that suits all the communication contexts?
Expound your answer in 3 to 5 sentences.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1
One shift that affects the communication process is the language form. Shifts in
communication primarily affect the form of language being used. This does not concern the variety
of languages, but they may take the forms that reflect the types of sentences that are already new.
When we see language form, it could either be formal or informal language. It refers to the
intent of the group words or types of sentences, internal grammatical structure of words and
phrases, as well as the words themselves.

Can you still recall the types of sentences that you studied when you were in the
elementary?
They are declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory. All these are part of language
forms.
How can we

Blend of language forms can be both absorbed in intrapersonal and interpersonal forms
of communication, but declarative languages are often used for public and mass
communication.

In public or mass communication, you don't use commands, mostly declarative because you
are giving information for speech style. One can shift from the use of declarative language during
formal and frozen styles of speech to interrogative language during consultative styles.
Since you always ask questions or clarifications, the speaker can also shift the blend of
declarative, interrogative and exclamatory in casual and intimate styles of communication.

While topic control, repair and termination sometimes require the use of both declarative
and exclamatory languages, the next communication shift that affects the communication
process is - duration of interruption.
This refers to time. It is the length of communication that could be shortened or lengthened
depending on how the conversation is going on between the sender and the receiver. Many
people say that regardless of how impressive your talk is, if it is too long, then it would surely
break the momentum. The time element is important.

The duration of interruption as to shifts in speech context often depends on the intent of
communication.

The speaker is sure that during the entire process of communication, the discussion of the topic
does not go beyond the indicated agenda.

The third communication shift that affects communication is the relationship of the
speaker. This refers to the bond between the speaker and receiver, which may depend on how
the discussions relate to the receiver's interests and knowledge.

Creating a positive relationship begins even before standing on a stage. This can be done
by smiling, greeting someone and reflecting humble and polite characteristics. Having a positive
relationship is applicable and advisable across speech contexts, speech styles and
communicative strategies for effective communication.

on the language, duration of interaction and the relationship of the speaker.
LANGUAGE

DURATION OF INTERACTION
How would you explain the relationship of the speaker to the listener in this kind of situation?
F. Developing Mastery

H. Making Generalization and Abstractions about the Lesson
Remember, a shift in speech context, speech style, speech act and communicative
strategy affects the following: Language form, Duration of interaction, and Relationship of speaker.
I. Evaluating Learning
Directions: Prepare a short script and a short-vlog on your topic of choice showing the shift in
communication affecting the language, duration of interaction and relationship of the speaker.
Once this is ready, start recording, making sure that your vlogs will only have a 2- to 3-minute run
time.
A. Create a communicative situation which displays the use of at least one of the types of speech
style, context and communicative strategy affecting the language, duration of interaction and
relationship of the speaker. A maximum of 20 sentences is encouraged.
