III- Infinitive I.

Gerund
1) Infinitive after modals: a) Gerunds used as subject of the sentence:

- We must respect each other. -Dancing is fun.

Modals: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, has to, had to, ought -Swimming is good sport.
to, had better, need to, don’t need to, don’t have to.
b) Gerunds used after certain verbs:

-He enjoys working with children.
- Let’s go out tonigiht.
Verbs: Appreciate, Avoid, Delay, Deny, Discuss, Dislike, Enjoy, Finish, Spend, love,
Gerund and Infinitive imagine, Keep; Consider; Mind; Miss; Postpone; Waste; Practise; Suggest; Adore, Like

Some verbs can be followed by either gerund or infinitive with no change in meaning. c) Gerunds used after the preposition:
Begin, start, like, love, prefer, hate, continue
- I prefer to have tea for breakfast. -I am interested in understanding this lesson.
- I prefer having tea for beakfast.
Prepositions: on, in, at, for, about, with, without, of, after, before, to, from, …etc

Some verbs can be followed by both gerund or infinitive with a difference in meaning like the d) Gerund used with some expressions:
verbs:
_I can’t stand watching tennis matches.
remember, forget, regret, stop, try
Other expressions: Be busy, can’t help/can’t stand, have fun, it’s no use/it’s no good, it’s not

Adjectives: Afraid, amazed, anxious, ashamed, careful, delighted, eager, fortunate, glad, happy,

4) To infinitive used after certain expressions:
