 SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

INTRODUCTION:

Short answer type questions are a type of assessment format where the respondent is asked to provide brief,
concise answers to a question or prompt. These questions often require a specific and factual answer, rather than
an explanation or analysis. They are commonly used in academic exams, assessments, and quizzes to test a
student's knowledge and understanding of a particular subject or topic. Short answer questions can range from
simple definitions to complex problem-solving scenarios, and are often used to assess comprehension, memory
recall, and critical thinking skills.

DEFINITION:

 Short answer items require the examinee to respond to the item with a word, short phrase, number or a
symbol.

 A short answer test items aims to test the knowledge by asking student to supply a word, phrase or a number
that answers a question of complete a sentence.

Types of short answer questions:
 Direct questions: These types of questions ask for specific information or facts and require a brief, direct
answer.
For example: What are the four vital signs?
 Completion questions: These questions provide a statement or phrase that is incomplete, and the student is
required to fill in the missing information.
For example: The normal range for blood pressure is over .
 Identification or association form are a type of short answer question that require the student to identify or
associate specific terms or concepts. These questions typically consist of two columns, with one column
containing a list of terms or concepts and the other column containing a list of descriptions, definitions, or
other related information. The student is required to match the correct term or concept with its corresponding
description or definition.
For example: Match the following medical abbreviations with their corresponding meanings:
(a) BP (i) Blood Pressure
(b) CBC (ii) Complete Blood Count
(c) ECG (iii) Electrocardiogram
(d) MRI (iv) Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Advantages of short answer type question:

 Short- answer test is easy to construct them as they measure only simple learning outcomes.
 They are very useful for the recall of simple memorized facts, and figures and it provide little opportunity
for guessing the students is required to supply information or to solve numerical Problem.
 They are useful to test lowest level of cognitive taxonomy, i.e., knowledge of terminology, classification
etc.
 Easy to score, reliability of the score is improved quick response.
 There is little scope for the influence of handwriting and spelling, etc. on marking.
 Marking is relatively objective as compared with essay type question.

Disadvantages of short answer type question:

 They are not suitable for measuring complex learning outcomes.

 They are not suitable for judging the power of analysing and reasoning of the student.
 They hamper creativity on the part of the learners.
 A student who started thinking has to stop compulsorily thus many of his taught are ended.

2. Nutritional assessment.
3. Role of pediatric nurse.
4. Expanded programme on immunization.
5. Moral development theories.
6. Failure to thrive
7. Principles of growth and development.
8. Characteristics of preterm babies.
9. Effect of hospitalization on child and family.
10. Breastfeeding.
