Homework 2

Name: Section:

Solve each problem and attach your steps of solving. Attach this homework to your notebook.

Problem (1): A racecar, moving at a constant tangential speed of 60 m/s, takes one lap around a
circular track in 50 seconds.
(a) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the car.
(b) If the mass of the car is 500 kg, find the centripetal force.

Problem (2): A 45 kg object has a tangential speed of 60 m/s and it is moving in a circular motion of
radius 5 m. Find the period T of this object’s circular motion. (Hint: Period is the time for 1 complete
cycle of circular motion)

Problem (3): An object with a mass of 30 kg has a tangential speed of 8 m/s. This object takes 2 hours
to complete one complete circle.
(c) Find the radius of the circular trajectory.
(d) Find the centripetal force.
(e) Find the centripetal acceleration.
Problem (4): A person pushes a lawnmower across 20 meters of grass. If the person pushes with 37
Newtons of force while pushing downward at an angle of 15 degrees below the horizontal, what is the
amount of work the person does on the lawnmower?

Problem (5): A 30 kg object travels 2 m down the plane on a 45° inclined plane. Assume no friction.
(Make a sketch to analyze the problem)

a) What force is exerted down the inclined plane?

b) What force acts perpendicular to the plane?
c) What is the work done by the force of gravity on the object.
(Hint: Analyze which component of force in part (a) or part (b) is along the direction of motion)
