ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING

ciflora2020
Average energy use of small business
Incandescent lamp
Incandescent lamp
• It is less expensive due to lower initial cost.
• It is easier to dim with rheostats.
• It produces warmer color compare to fluorescent
and tungsten-halogen lamps.
• It generates relatively high light output.
• It can be dimmed or controlled.
• It is easy to install.
• It is available in various shapes, sizes and
applications.
• It can be switched ON immediately.
Incandescent lamp
• It is energy inefficient.
• It has very short lamp life time i.e. about 1000 hours
typically.
• It is warm source of light and hence requires air
conditioning to cool the room.
• It has higher operating cost.
• It is very fragile and hence needs to be handled very
carefully.
• It generates low lumen per watt. Ordinary
incandescent bulbs produces about 5 to 20 lumens per
watt. This means it has lower efficacy.
Tungsten-Halogen
Tungsten-Halogen
• Halogen Bulbs Last Longer
• Less Energy Expenditure
• No Mercury Waste
• More Expensive
• Hotter Burn
Energy Efficient Lamps
• Linear Fluorescent
Lamp

• CFL

• LED
Linear Fluorescent Lamp
Linear Fluorescent Lamp
• less energy than more traditional bulbs.
• sizing issues,
• coloring when compared with incandescent
bulbs,
• higher up-front investment.
Linear Fluorescent Lamp
• T12 – commonly used
old type 40 Watts
fluorescent lamp

• T8 – newer than T12 36

Watts

• T5 –newest 28 W

Parameters T5 T8 T12

Energy Label for Linear Fluorescent
Lamp
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)
• simply miniature
versions of full-sized
fluorescents

• Efficient: 4 times more

efficient and last up to
10 times longer than
incandescents
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)
• Less Expensive:
Although initially more
expensive, you save
money in the long run
because CFLs use 1/3
the electricity and last
up to 10 times as long
as incandescents
Limitations of CFL
• Their rated lifetimes of 10,000
hours are reduced in
applications where the light is
switched on and off very often

• CFLs contain small amounts of

mercury which is a toxic metal
Energy Label for CFL
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
• solid light bulbs which
are extremely energy-
efficient

• last up to 10 times as
long as compact
fluorescents

• Durable and mercury

free
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
• Although LEDs are initially
expensive, the cost is recouped
over time

• They generally consume 80% less

power than
incandescent lamp and 50% of
CFL.
Limitations of using LED’s
• Currently more expensive
than more conventional
lighting technologies

• Temperature limitation may

affect light output
CFL vs LED

CFL LED
Light bulb projected lifespan 10,000 hours 50,000 hours
Watts per bulb 15 12

Cost per bulb Php 100 Php 250
High Intensity Discharge (HID)
• Utilize arc tubes
• Very high temperature
and pressure
• Mercury Vapor (MV)
• Metal Halide (MH)
• Low pressure Sodium
(LPS)
• High Pressure Sodium
(HPS)
HID applications
• High bay interior
industrial application
• Street lights

• Flood lighting
• Docks
• Security lightings
