QUESTION 2
Learners perform THREE investigations (A, B and C) to study THREE factors
which affect the rate of a chemical reaction. They use the reaction between
solid zinc (Zn) and EXCESS hydrochloric acid (HCℓ) solution, represented by
the balanced chemical equation below, in all the three investigations.
Zn(s) + 2HCℓ (aq) ZnCℓ2 (aq) + H2(g)

2.1 INVESTIGATION A: The learners conduct two experiments using the

conditions as shown in the table below.

Mass of State of Concentration of Temperature

Zn (g) Zn HCℓ (mol·dm-3) of HCℓ (°C)

Experiment 1 2 powder 0,2 25

Experiment 2 2 granules 0,2 25

2.1.1 Which factor influencing reaction rate is being investigated? (1)

2.1.2 Write down the investigative question for this investigation A. (2)
2.1.3 Write down TWO conditions required for a chemical reaction to
take place. (2)
2.1.4 The learners observe that the reaction rate is lower in
experiment 2 compared to experiment 1. Use the collision
theory to explain this observation. (2)

2.2 INVESTIGATION B: The learners conduct two experiments using the

conditions in the table below.
Mass of State of Concentration of Temperature
Zn (g) Zn HCℓ (mol·dm-3) of HCℓ (°C)

Experiment 3 2 granules 0,2 25

Experiment 4 2 granules 1,0 25

3
Physical sciences Grade 12 Topic test- May 2021

2.2.1 Define the term rate of the reaction. (2)

For this investigation B;
2.2.2 Identify the independent variable. (1)
2.2.3 Write down the hypothesis. (2)
2.2.4 Which experiment 3 or 4 will show a higher reaction rate? Use
collision theory to explain your answer. (3)
2.2.5 The reactions in both experiments 3 and 4 run to completion.
How will the yield of hydrogen gas (H2) produced in experiment
4 compare to that of experiment 3? Write down SMALLER
THAN, LARGER THAN or EQUAL TO. (1)

2.2.6 Give a reason for your answer to QUESTION 2.2.5. (1)

2.3 INVESTIGATION C: The learners conduct two experiments using the

conditions as shown below.

Mass of State of Concentration of Temperature

Zn (g) Zn HCℓ (mol·dm-3) of HCℓ (°C)

Experiment 5 4 powder 0,2 25

Experiment 6 4 powder 0,2 35

Physical sciences Grade 12 Topic test- May 2021

2.3.1 In which experiment, 5 or 6, will the particles have the highest

kinetic energy? (1)
2.3.2 On the same set of axes, draw sketch graphs of the number of
molecules versus kinetic energy (also known as a
Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve) for each of experiment 5
and experiment 6.

 Label both axes.

 Clearly label each graph as experiment 5 and

experiment 6. (3)
2.3.3 Explain the differences between the two graphs. (4)

QUESTION 3
The graph below shows the changes in the potential energy of a reaction.

3.1 Is this reaction exothermic or endothermic? Give a reason for your

answer. (2)

3.2 Which point (A, B or C) represents the activated complex? (1)

3.3 A catalyst is then added to the reaction above in order to change the
course of the reaction. Redraw the above graph in your answer book.
On the graph, use a broken line to indicate the reaction path in
presence of a catalyst. (2)
3.4 Use the graph in 3.3 to explain how the catalyst influences the rate of a
chemical reaction. (3)

QUESTION 4
Learners used the reaction between magnesium powder and dilute
hydrochloric acid at 40 OC to investigate some of the factors that affect the rate
of a chemical reaction. The following set up of apparatus was used.

Hydrogen Gas cylinder

Conical flask

HCℓ(aq)
Mg(s)

Magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid according to the following

balanced chemial equation.
Mg (s) + 2 HCl (aq) MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
