ABSTRACT

Carinderias are small eateries that offer homecooked meals to the public. Often nearby

schools, students have frequented these joints for meals for a long time, often due to the

affordability of the food of the establishments. This research studied the Socio-Economic effects

of affordable meal options within the vicinity of National University – Manila. The researchers

used a standard 14-question questionnaire and utilized random population to formulate an

understanding of the topic.

As the cost of living keeps on increasing, students and the local population alike are

concerned about accessibility to affordable and nutritious meals. This research study examines

the socio-economic effects of affordable meal alternatives within the vicinity of the National

University of Manila. The researchers will use a standard 14-question questionnaire and utilize a

random population to formulate an understanding of the topic. The results of this study will

provide significant insight on the socio-economic effects of affordable eating establishments like

carinderias, emphasizing their significance within the context of a university community and the

potential for more widespread application in addressing food affordability issues in urban areas.

INTRODUCTION

Filipinos are renowned for loving cuisine. And that's the reason why so many people now

work in the food industry. A location close to a school where students on a tight budget would

frequent is a perfect place to open a Carinderia.

Carinderia or “Karinderya” is a Filipino term for eateries or small-scale restaurants. It

serves several homemade dishes at affordable prices for everyone’s capability. Carinderias and

the affordable home-cooked Filipino specialties they serve are an integral part of our country's

culinary and social identity. But this business, which has improved the lives of about three

million people and their families, does more than that. It provides a glimpse into Filipino culture

and customs because they are the most similar to what is served in Filipino families, where

delicious dishes are passed down through generations.

Filipino families living in remote places send their children to colleges or universities

away from home for quality education. These students have to learn to adjust to new conditions

of living without a family member of greater experience to guide them (Bush et al., 1985). The

majority of the students at National University-Manila are from far places and stay in lodging

houses or dormitories and buy food from restaurants and fast-food chains. Residing in lodging

houses is a new lifestyle that may provide them with an opportunity to learn how to live

independently (Khozaei et al., 2010). e. Students were found to rarely create a weekly budget for

their expenses and exercise prudence sometimes. They preferred carinderias with cleanliness,

affordability of foods, and taste as their main considerations. As a result, individuals can choose

food to buy here that is within their student budget. This paper argues that the availability of

affordable meal options, such as carinderias, can contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable

local economy, as evidenced by their impact on the livelihoods of small business owners,

workers, and consumers in the National University-Manila area.

Considering all this, the socio-economic effects of affordable meal options such as

carinderias within the vicinity of the National University in Manila are multi-faceted and

significant. These establishments play a crucial role in shaping the lives of both students and the

surrounding community, influencing not only their daily routines but also broader economic and

social dynamics. Affordable meal options like carinderias help alleviate the financial burden on

students, ensuring they have access to nutritious and affordable food, which is vital for their

academic success and overall well-being. Universities and other academic institutions are also

responsible for informing students of the impact of food choices and other food-related activities

on their well-being. This leads to improved student performance and retention rates, ultimately

benefiting the university and contributing to a more educated and skilled workforce for the

country. The findings of this study may shed light on how these Carinderias affect the socio-

economic within the vicinity of the university.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This research was conducted to determine the Socio-Economic Effects of

Affordable Meal Options Like Carinderias within National University vicinity. This

study will utilize a qualitative method, to gather comprehensive data and insight. The

target population for this research will include students, workers, and members of the

surrounding community. A purposive sampling technique will be employed to select

participants who have direct experience with Carinderias in the area. Qualitative Data is

in-depth interviews will be conducted with students, workers and members of the

community to explore their perspectives, experiences, and perceptions regarding the

socio-economic impact of Carinderias. Moreover, this qualitative research gathered data

with the use of interview questionnaires through Google Forms. The data will be coded

and categorized to identify the key findings.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Chart 1 shows that 95% of the respondents are students of the National University – of Manila

and the remaining 5% are at the National University – of Nazareth.

Chart 2 shows that 35% of the respondents are 19 years of age, 30% are 20 years of age, 20% are

21 years of age and the remaining are ages 22 to 33 years old.

Question 1. How has access to affordable meal options in carinderias near National

University affected your daily spending and budget?

It indicates that affordable meals in carinderias are pretty accessible, they have a variety of

choices and It helps them to spend less and save money for other necessities/spending.

Question 2. How do you perceive the quality and nutritional value of meals offered in these

affordable carinderias compared to more expensive dining options in the area?

Most of the respondents perceived that the food they prepared, and the service were both

proficient in terms of cleanliness even when compared to the expensive dining options, it is

easily accessible to the university. Some are choosing expensive meals as they conclude that it

has better service, quality guaranteed foods, and well-ventilated areas.

Question 3. Do you think having affordable meals around National University helps

students and the local community financially? How?

Most of the respondents answered “YES” as it offers financial benefits by reducing the living

costs for students and contributing to the local economy and community development.

Question 4. How has the availability of affordable meal options in nearby carinderias

changed the way you eat and manage your expenses?

It indicates that the availability of budget-friendly meals can result in financial savings, affect

how budgets are managed, alter dining patterns, and provide more diverse and convenient dining

options. Some of them responded that it changed the routine of how they manage their expenses

on a daily basis.

Question 5. Describe your experiences in carinderias within the vicinity of the National

University

Most of the respondents were not fully satisfied with the food and its environment due to its

crowded surroundings, warm space, and services at a bare minimum. While some of the

respondents are all good and comfortable.

Question 6. Have you or someone you know experienced a change in financial well-being

due to the affordability of meals at carinderias near the university?

The majority of the respondents responded that they did not know or notice any change in

financial well-being due to the affordability of meals at carinderias near the university.

Question 7. Do you think eating in carinderias may affect your health?

It shows that 70% of the respondents answered that carinderias may affect our health and the

remaining 30% say it does not.

Question 8. How important is the availability of affordable meal options in your decision to

attend National University – Manila?

The survey responses indicate that the availability of affordable meal options is generally

considered important by the students of National University - Manila. The reasons cited include

the ability to budget effectively, the variety and quality of food options, and the convenience of

having nearby eateries. Some respondents also mentioned the health benefits of affordable meals

and the appeal of home-cooked food. However, a few respondents noted that affordable meals

did not significantly influence their decision to attend the university, suggesting that other factors

such as educational quality and campus facilities were more critical in their decision-making

process.

Question 9. What long term implications do you see for the socio-economic landscape of the

area due to the presence of affordable meal options like carinderias?

The survey responses suggest that the presence of affordable meal options like carinderias could

have significant long-term socio-economic implications for the area. These include increased

foot traffic and potential crowding, a need for expansion and improved infrastructure, and a

possible shift towards healthier food options. Respondents also foresee a potential increase in

meal prices due to high demand. The presence of these eateries could enhance community

resilience, improve food accessibility, support local entrepreneurship, and contribute to local

economies. However, some respondents expressed concerns about potential issues such as

unstructured growth and sanitation problems.

a sense of belonging and community among students and residents in the vicinity? Why?

The survey results indicate a unanimous agreement among the 20 respondents that the presence

of affordable meal options contributes to a sense of belonging and community among students

and residents in the vicinity. The reasons cited include the opportunity for social interaction and

shared experiences, the provision of balanced nutrition, the convenience and cost-effectiveness

of local eateries, and the cultural significance of communal dining experiences. The respondents

also highlighted the role of these eateries in supporting local vendors and fostering connections

within the community.

The majority of students and residents near National University-Manila find that affordable meal

options, such as carinderias, positively impact their standard of living by providing convenience

and financial freedom. However, concerns were raised about the nutritional value of these

affordable meals and potential health risks associated with daily consumption. The impact varies

based on individual circumstances and the quality of food and services provided. Crowding

issues at cheaper carinderias were also noted, occasionally leading students to opt for more

expensive food stalls.
