COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

CORE VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY ACTION INITIATIVES

LESSON 1: HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

HUMANITY- its early history has been preoccupied with its search for meaning. In its journey, people
have been beset by good and evil sides of humanity.

HUMAN RIGHTS AND QUEST FOR MEANING- Humanity has evolved from its most animal instincts
motivated simply by its will to survive.

EMERGENCE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND HUMAN RIGHTS- The effect of the two wars that
nearly eradicated half of the world both called for nations to unite.

League of Nations- signed by 44 states during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.

ARTICLES:

1. RIGHT TO EQUALITY- All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

2. FREEDOM FROM DISCRIMINATION- Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in
this Declaration.

3. RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY, PERSONAL SECURITY- Everyone has the right to life, ilberty, and security
of person.

4. FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY- No one shall be held in slavery or servitude.


5. FREEDOM FROM TORTURE AND DEGRADING TREATMENT- No one shall be subjected to torture or
to cruel.

6. RIGHT TO RECOGNITION AS A PERSON BEFORE THE LAW- Everyone has the right to recognition
everywhere as a person before the law.

7. RIGHT TO EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW- All are equal before the law and are entitled without any
discrimination.

8. RIGHT TO REMEDY BY COMPETENT TRIBUNAL- Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by
the competent.

9.FREEDOM FROM ARBITRARY ARREST AND EXILE- No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest,
detention, or exile.

10. RIGHT TO FAIR PUBLIC HEARING- Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing.

11. RIGHT TO BE CONSIDERED INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY- Everyone charged with a penal
offense.

-No one shall be held guilty of any penal offense.

12. FREEDOM FROM INTERFERENCE WITH PRIVACY, FAMILY, HOME, AND CORRESPONDENCE- No
one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy.

13. RIGHT TO FREE MOVEMENT IN AND OUT OF THE COUNTRY- Everyone has the right to freedom of
movement.

-Everyone has the right to leave any country.

14. RIGHT TO ASYLUM IN OTHER COUNTRIES FROM PERSECUTION- Everyone has the right to seek
and to enjoy in other countries.

-This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions.


15. RIGHT TO A NATIONALITY AND THE FREEDOM TO CHANGE IT- Everyone has the right to a
nationality. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality.

16. RIGHT TO MARRIAGE AND FAMILY- Men and woman full age.

-Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent.

-The family is natural and fundamental group unit of society.

17. RIGHT TO OWN PROPERTY- Everyone has right to own property.

20. RIGHT OF PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY AND ASSOCIATION- Everyone has the right to freedom of
leaceful assembly.

-No one may be compelled to belong.

21. RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN GOVERNMENT AND IN FREE ELECTIONS- Everyone has right to take
part in the government of his country.

-Everyone has right of equal access to public.

-The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority.

22. RIGHT TO SOCIAL SECURITY- Everyone has right to social security.

23. RIGHT TO DESIRABLE WORK AND TO JOIN TRADE UNIONS- Everyone has right to work.

-Has right to equal pay.

-Everyone who works has the right to just and favorable remuneration.
-Everyone has the right to form.

24.RIGHT TO REST AND LEISURE- Everyone jas right to rest and leisure.

25. RIGHT TO ADEQUATE LIVING STANDARDS- Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate
for the health.

-Motherhood and childhood are entittted spacial care.

26. RIGHT TO EDUCATION- Everone has right to Education.

27. RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IM THE CULTURAL LIFE OF COMMUNITY- Everyone has the right freely to
participate in the cultural life.

-Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral.

28. RIGHT TO A SOCIAL ORDER THAT ARTICULATES THIS DOCUMENT- Entitled to a social and
international order in which the rights.

29. COMMUNITY DUTIES ESSENTIAL TO FREE AND FULL DEVELOPMENT- Everyone has duties to
community.

30. FREEDOM FROM STATE OR PERSON INTERFERENCE IN THE ABOVE RIGHTS- Nothing in this
Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State.

SOCIAL JUSTICE- is a hotly debated topic.

-Its definition is relative to the context of its application and implications. The United Nations
provided this definition of the term

HUMAN RIGHTS- are a very sensitive topic especially in developing countries like the Philippines.
Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in the Philippines is embodied in it's fundamental law.

Under Article XIII, Section 18 of the 1987 Constitution, the CHR is mandated to secure the welfare of
human rights in the country.

LESSON 2: EMPOWERMENT, ADVOCACY, AND PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT.

THE BIRTH OF COMMUNITY ACTION- The very idea of community action originated in the United
States during the 1960s.

-It was the time when the US was beset with social problems within communities in a post-war
economy,

THE BASICS OF COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT- The concept of empowerment is the driving force
behind community development.

-Empowerment combines the idea of power relations between the communities into one concept.

THE PUBLIC SECTOR AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT- The public sector is fundamentally
controlled by the government.

-It has a very specific take on community empowerment which is state-centric.

(DSWD- DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT)

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPOSIBILITY- Corporations are often depicted as power-hungry, profit and
rent-seeking entities that only exist to exploit consumers and workers.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP- is attributed to business establishments that cause social change


through the creation and institutionalization of businesses.

SOCIAL BUSINESS- A modern interpretation of the social enterprise.


-a term coined by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

-is an enterprise that also aims to produce positive impact on society where profits are expected not
to enrish.

THE B-CORP MOVEMENT- The transition from strictly for-profit organizations to social enterprises
and social business heralded.

MICROFINANCE- Dr. Muhammad Yunus's quest for social change started in Bangladesh when he
noticed the lack of the poor's access to capital.
