Nasal Surgery

Leaving Hospital
 If you have been told that you have nasal splints, then please ring the office to
make a post op appointment 1 week after surgery
 If there were no nasal splints then ring to make a post op appointment 2
weeks after surgery
 There are no dietary restrictions although it is best not to drink or eat very hot
(temperature) items
 Make sure that you pick up all medications required prior to leaving hospital
 Do not plan to drive home from Hospital

Nasal Packing & Splints

 You will have dissolvable dressings in your nose, these dissolve once you
commence nasal douching and do not need to be removed
 For the first week post op because of the dressings in your nose your nose
will feel blocked
 Occasionally plastic nasal splints are inserted, if you have been told that
nasal splints have been inserted then they will need to be removed usually 1
week after your surgery. This is done in the office and is uncomfortable, but
generally not painful to remove
 You will be given a nasal bolster to wear under your nose to catch any drips,
this can generally be removed on the first day after surgery

Medication and Nasal Washing

 You will be given an Antibiotic called Augmentin Duo Forte (if not allergic to it)
to take for the first week after surgery, take 1 tablet twice a day for 1 week.
This will help prevent the development of infection

 You will be given a bottle of FLO sinus rinse, use cooled kettle boiled water
and mix it with the provided sachet then wash your nose twice a day. This will
help keep the nose clean and remove the dissolvable dressings
 You will be given an ointment called bactroban ointmaent, use a pea sized
amount on the end of your finger and gently place it in each nostril. This will
help reduce crusting and irritation around your nose

Pain control
 You will be given a script for Panadeine Forte, you can take up to 2 tablets 4
times per day. If this is not controlling your pain then please contact your
anaesthetist or me

Precautions
 Try not to blow your nose for the first week after surgery, it is best to wash
your nose with the FLO sinus rinse or sniff rather than blow your nose
 If you sneeze try to do so with your mouth open
 Do not do any heavy lifting of vigorous sporting activities for the first 2 weeks
after surgery
 Some bleeding is expected after surgery. To control this bleeding sit up, bend
forward and pinch your nostrils together gently for 10 minutes. If this does not
control your bleeding then contact me on my mobile and go to your nearest
emergency department

Nausea and vomiting

 Some nausea and vomiting is expected for the first 24 hrs after surgery and is
usually related to your anaesthetic. If it persists contact your anaesthetist.
