Electrochemical processes are poised to play a critical role in the future energy economy by supporting
widespread decarbonization efforts and providing new avenues for sustainable energy use including the
electrification of industry. Opportunities exist for the development and integration of novel
electrochemical processes that offer carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative synthetic routes to
important products by exploiting new reactivities that enable molecular transformations difficult to
realize via thermochemical methods. This mini-review highlights these opportunities by first
considering the factors that have enabled electrochemical technologies to flourish in certain industrial
sectors and then contemplating how those attributes may be leveraged to enable broader
adoption. Hydrogen production, carbon dioxide fixation, and organic hydrogenation are discussed as
promising electrochemical processes that may find industrial use in the near future.

Chemical companies are constantly seeking new, high-margin growth opportunities, the majority of
which lie in high-grade, specialty chemicals, rather than in the bulk sector. To realize these
opportunities, manufacturers are increasingly considering decentralized, flexible production facilities:
large-scale production units are uneconomical for innovative products with a short lifespan and volatile
markets. Small modular plants have low financial risks, are flexible and can respond rapidly to changes
in demand. Logistics costs can be also reduced by moving production closer to customers and/or
sources of raw materials. Moreover, stricter safety regulations can in many cases be more easily met
using smaller distributed facilities. Modularization of chemical production can thus have potentially
significant economic and safety benefits. In this article, several drivers for modular production are
reviewed, and modular production architectures are evaluated based on a new metric, the value density
of feedstock resources and markets for the products of a process. The links between modularization and
process intensification are also discussed. Several industrial examples are provided and used to

Sustainability is vital in solving global societal problems. Still, it requires a holistic view by
considering renewable energy and carbon sources, recycling waste streams, environmentally friendly
resource extraction and handling, and green manufacturing. Flow chemistry at the microscale can enable
continuous sustainable manufacturing by opening up new operating windows, precise residence time
control, enhanced mixing and transport, improved yield and productivity, and inherent safety.
Furthermore, integrating microfluidic systems with alternative energy sources, such as microwaves and
plasmas, offers tremendous promise for electrifying and intensifying modular and distributed chemical
processing. This review provides an overview of microflow chemistry, electrification, their integration
toward sustainable manufacturing, and their application to biomass upgrade (a select number of other
processes are also touched upon). Finally, we identify critical areas for future research, such as
matching technology to the scale of the application, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle

The industrial scale production and wide variety of applications of manufactured nanoparticles (NPs)
and their possible release in considerable amounts into the natural aquatic environment have produced
an increasing concern among the nanotechnology and environmental science community. In order to
address this issue, it is important to understand NP chemistry, preparation, reactivity and possible
mechanisms involved in their interaction with the naturally occurring aquatic components, particularly
natural colloids and NPs present in the aquatic systems. In this review, an overview of the chemistry of
both manufactured and natural aquatic NPs is outlined. This review discusses the physico-chemical
aspects of both type of NPs as an essential point to assess possible routes involved in manufactured NP
fate in the natural aquatic environment and their toxicity. Key advances related to the characterisation of
