How to use the materials
All activities should be done in the order shown below

Rhyme lotto:
1. Print the four boards and the cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut (make sure the lines are even). You may want to save the rhyme
pair words until you have played a few times.
2. Two to four players choose 1 or 2 board(s) each. Place the cards upside down on the work rug/table.
3. Player 1 turns a card. The player who has the rhyme word gets the card and places it on the correct spot on the board. The player who
gets the card draws the next card.
4. The winner is the one who fills their board first.

I spy mats:
1. Print, laminate (if necessary) and cut the mats. You may want to save the word lists if you are not sure what's on the pictures.
2. Tell the child the names of the animals before starting. Then play the I spy game as usual (I spy with my little eyes something beginning
with "a" (use the letter sound, not the name). The mats helps to limit the words and makes it easier in the beginning. You can do two or
more mats when they are more confident.

Picture to word matching:

1. Print cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut. Make sure the lines are even!
2. Start with only one of the sets. Place the picture cards in two horizontal rows and the word cards in a pile. Tell the child to identify the
letter sounds on the first card. Use the pictures for support ("c-a-r ...hmm.. c.c.c, what starts with c". Let the child work through the
pile.
3. Use the pictures with the movable alphabet. Let the child spell the words.
4. Note: Do not correct the child. The material is self correcting. If a card is placed incorrectly, they will notice when they get to the
correct word.

Pink lotto:
1. See rhyme lotto.
2. Note: Be patient. The child will sometimes want you to read the card they have drawn. Tell them it's their turn. Bite your tongue and sit on
your hands.

Picture to sentence matching:

1. See picture to word matching. This is the same, but the difficulty level is harder.

Command cards:
1. Print cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut. Make sure the lines are even!
2. Tell the child (or preferably children) you are showing them something new and exciting, and remind them that all activities in the work
area is done quietly and without interrupting others.
3. Read the first card and act out the command animatedly without making a sound. Look around you and pretend to check if anyone
was disrupted. Let the child read the next card and act it out.

Write the missing letters:

1. Print the cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut. Make sure the lines are even and the corners slightly rounded.
2. Let the child use a whiteboard marker to write on the cards. Wipe with a cloth.

Lists of CVC words:

1. Print the cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut. Make sure the lines are even and the corners slightly rounded.
2. Show the lists to the child. What does the words on each list have in common? Can they think of more words like that.
3. Let the child write the words from the lists using the movable alphabet, create their own lists, make books etc.

Domino:
1. Print the cards, laminate (if necessary) and cut. Make sure the lines are even and the corners slightly rounded.
2. Find the "start" card and look at the next picture. Find the card with the word that matches and place it next to it.

The secret box:

1. Print the cards and cut (do not laminate). Make sure the lines are even and the corners slightly rounded. Place the cards in a box.
2. Present as a novel exercise, in a dramatic way. Remove the lid of the box. Pick one card. Open and close it to your chest. Read and
whisper the word so the child cannot hear. With drama, refold the paper and place in the upturned lid. Let the child pick the next word.
Explain that these are their secret words.
3. Note. This is first reading activity children do without the support of items or pictures. By this stage children will be starting to read
independently.
