Exogenic and Endogenic

Processes
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the discussion…
• I will be able to enumerate and describe each exogenic and endogenic processes
• I will be able to explain the implications of the exogenic and endogenic processes to the
planet
3

What do you mean by Exo?

4
Exogenic Processes

These processes are natural occurrences on or near the

surface of the earth that leave significant changes on the
landscape and even in the ecosystem of an area.
Weathering 5

This is the disintegration or decomposition of rocks, soils, and

minerals together with other materials through contact with Earth’s
subsystems.

PHYSICAL CHEMICAL
WEATHERING WEATHERING
Physical Weathering 6

Also called mechanical weathering, this process reduces solid rock

to small fragments.
Pressure-Release Fracturing 7

Commonly found on rocks previously located at the Earth’s surface,

this process occurs when the pressure on the rock decreases
causing the rock to expand and create a fracture.
Frost Wedging 8

This process occurs when water accumulates in a crack and then

freezes causing it to wedge the rock apart.
Abrasion 9

This process occurs when rocks, sand grains, and silt collide with
one another due to currents or waves causing the rock to become
rounded.
Root Wedging 10

This process occurs when roots grow and expand causing the rock
to wedge apart.
Chemical Weathering 11

This process occurs when air and water chemically react with rock
to alter its composition and mineral content.
Dissolution 12

This process occurs when water comes into contact with rocks and
dissolves the minerals that make up that rock into individual
elements.
Hydrolysis 13

This process occurs when water reacts with one mineral to form a
new mineral that has water as part of its crystal structure.
Oxidation 14

This process occurs when oxygen reacts with other substances

especially with iron through rusting.
Erosion 15

This is the process by which the surface of the earth gets worn
down.
Mass Wasting 16

This is the process by which earth move downslope under the force
of gravity.
Debris Flow 17

This is the process when a mass of earth falls on a downslope

without water.
Mudflow 18

This is the process when a combined soil and water flow

downslope.
Slumps 19

This is a slow downslope movement of loosely consolidated

materials or rock and soil layers.
Sedimentation 20

This is the process when eroded particles suspended in water

settle out of it under the effect of gravity.
21

What can you say about the figure that shows the
Exogenic Processes?
22

If exo refers to something external, then

what does endo refer to?
23
Endogenic Processes

These processes are caused by forces from within the earth

due to the thermal energy of the mantle and the crust.
Magmatism 24

This is the process where formation and movement of magma

occur.
Volcanism 25

This is the process when magma escapes from the earth through
volcanoes or cracks on the grounds.
Metamorphism 26

This is the process by which rising temperature and pressure, or

changing chemical conditions, transform rocks and minerals.
27

How can endogenic processes relate to the

movement of the earth?
