1.1) Proper Storage

• General safety is the statement made on how to handle or

how to interact with each and everything before, during and
after conducting a given laboratory experiment for every
person who enters into the laboratory.

• Choose the right area for storing your tools like a dry
place with low humidity.

• Keep them in a power tool storage cabinet

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 8
1.1) Proper Storage

• Place your equipment on power tool storage racks.

• Use the original packaging.

• Hang your power tools.

• Remove all batteries

1.2) Proper Usage

Basic safety rules for using hand tools

• Regularly inspect your tools to make sure that they are in good
condition.

• Don't pocket sharp objects.

• Be aware of your surroundings.

• Use the right tools.

• Follow instructions, Clean and return.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 11
1.2) Proper Usage

➢ OSHA offers the following tips about common types of

equipment misuse:

✓ Do not misuse multi-receptacle boxes designed to be

mounted by fitting them with a power cord and placing them
on the floor.

✓ Do not fabricate extension cords with Romex wire.

✓ Replace all cords or tools with worn insulation or exposed

wires.
Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 12
1.2) Proper Usage

➢ OSHA…..

✓ Never modify cords or tools by removing ground prongs,

face plates or insulation.

✓ Ensure equipment labeled for dry, indoor use is never

used outside or in damp conditions.

✓ Do not attach an ungrounded, two-prong adaptor plug to

three-prong cords and tools.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 13
1.2) Proper Usage

✓ Refrain from using circuit breakers or fuses with the wrong

rating for over-current protection (i.e., using a 30-amp
breaker with a 15- or 20-amp receptacle). Protection will be
lost because it will not trip when the system’s load has been
exceeded.

✓ To ensure worker safety, only use equipment that is

approved to meet all OSHA standards, and use it in
accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

• It is must to know the safety signs and instructions before

entering into the laboratory in order to be safe.
➢Burn:- Most common shock-related injury
➢Electrocution:- Results when a human is
exposed to a lethal amount of electrical
energy
➢Shock:- Reflex response to passage of
electric current through the body
Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 16
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

• Arc flash:-Sudden release of electrical energy through air when

a high-voltage gap exists and there is a breakdown between
conductors.

• Gives off thermal radiation (heat) and bright, intense light that
can cause burns. Temperatures as high as 35,000°F
Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 17
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

• Arc blast:- high-voltage arcs can also produce considerable

pressure waves by rapidly heating the air and creating a
blast

• Fire:- Most result from problems with "fixed wiring”

• Problems with cords, plugs, receptacles, and switches also

cause electrical fires.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 18
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

• Explosions:- Occur when electricity ignites explosive

mixture of material in the air

• Some types of Safety signs are:-

✓ Prohibition Signs:- are there to tell you
not to do something. They are a danger
sign, telling you that it is not safe to
proceed.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 19
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

✓ Mandatory Signs:- are there to tell

you to do something. Consider these
the opposite of prohibition signs.

✓ Warning Signs:- are there to warn you of

dangers. Unlike the two previous signs,
they don't tell you not to do something, or
to do something.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 20
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

✓ Safe Condition Signs:- can usually be

followed to safety. And what color better
represents safety than green?

✓ Fire Equipment Signs:- show you where

fire equipment is. What color do we think
of for fire? Red. But we already used red,
with the prohibition sign.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 21
1.3) Safety Signs and Instructions

Some of the safety instructions are:

✓ operate the device according to safety requirements,
✓ maintain the device according to guidelines,
✓ clean the device according to guidelines,
✓ take appropriate measures should a fault occur.

1.4) Common types of Electrical tools
• Electricians need different electrical tools in the process of
electrical installation and maintenance of faults.

• Some of these tools are as:

1.4.1) Power Tools:- have a power source that allows

them to operate automatically and without human
intervention.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 Compiled by Mr. Simeneh Atsa, HU, HIT, SECE 24
1.4) Common types of Electrical tools

1) Soldering iron:- supplies heat to melt

solder so that it can flow into the joint
between two workpieces.

2) Drills:- an instrument with an edged or

pointed end for making holes in hard
substances by revolving or by a
succession of blows

1.4.2) Hand Tools:- are exactly what they sound like –

tools that require manual labor to use.

1) Pliers:- are tools made in various shapes and sizes and

for many uses. Some are used for gripping something
round like a pipe or rod, some are used for twisting wires,
and others are designed to be used for a combination of
tasks including cutting wire, some are used for bending and
also for holding wires.

2) Screw driver:- A hand or machine tool which
engages with the head of a screw and allows
torque to be applied to turn the screw, thus
driving it in or loosening it.

3) Hammer:- A hammer is a tool, most often a hand

tool, consisting of a weighted "head" fixed to a
long handle that is swung to deliver an impact to
a small area of an object.
