ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENT OF D.C.

REEL TYPE DIPPER TRIP

AS USED ON 495HR/HF ELECTRIC MINING SHOVELS

General:

The electrical adjustments on the D.C. dipper trip should be made such that the
following two conditions are met:

1. When digging, the torque on the motor should be high enough to reel in the
excess trip cable when retracting the dipper and should be low enough to
prevent accidental tripping of the dipper when crowding out.

2. When tripping the dipper, sufficient torque must be available to quickly take
up any slack in the trip line and trip the dipper.

The torque of the motor which is critical in both 1 and 2 above may be adjusted in
two ways:

a) Increasing the motor shunt field current or

b) Increasing the armature current.

There are a number of settings on RE13 and RE10, which should provide
satisfactory tripping. However, in order to arrive at the optimum setting
(maximum torque with the least strain on the components) the following
procedure should be followed.

CAUTION: The trip motor is not rated for continuous operation at stall. Care
should be exercised when testing to see that the motor is not held
on trip for more than 2 to 3 seconds more than once every half a
minute.

Test Procedure:

1. Before closing the dipper trip breaker (DTB), the tap setting on RE10 and
RE13 should be checked to see that they are at the initial position as show
below:

RECOMMENDED INITIAL SETTINGS

D1 to D7 = 26.0 ohms
D3 to D7 = 11.7 ohms
D2 to D7 = 46.65 ohms
D1F to D2 = 0.95 ohms

2. Close the dipper trip breaker and energize the DC bus. If the rotation is
incorrect to take up the trip cable, reconnect the motor as noted on the
connection diagram. The operation, when crowding or retracting, should be
as noted in No. 1 in the General section.

a) If it is necessary to increase the torque to keep the trip cable tight,

decrease the resistance of RE13. This can be accomplished by moving
wire D3 towards D7.

b) To decrease the torque, increase the resistance of RE13. This can be

accomplished by moving wire D3 away from wire D7.

NOTE: Wire D7 should not be moved off of the 13 ohm resistor.

3. Attempt to trip the dipper by actuating the dipper trip switch with the bucket
stationary. The results should be as noted in No. 2 in the General section.

a) If additional torque is needed, decrease the resistance between D2 and

D1F. This can be accomplished by using less of RE10-4 moving wire D2
toward wire D1F.

b) If it appears that less torque would be sufficient to trip the dipper,

increase the resistance between D2 and D1F. This can be accomplished
by using more resistance on RE10-4 or moving D2 to RE10-3 and using
less of this resistor. Move wire D2 away from wire D1F.

4. If it is not possible to obtain sufficient torque in either 2 or 3 above, short out

some of the resistance between RE10-2 and RE10-4 (approximately ½) and
repeat Steps 2 and 3 to obtain the desired results.
