13. Operation
All switches can be operated with the included operating handle. Internal mechanical interlocking between the switch
disconnector/isolator and the associated earthing switches prevents incorrect operation. For detailed interlocking
description, see dedicated overview for each module in catalogue.
The operation of the switch disconnector/circuit-breaker and earthing switches can be further interlocked by means of a
padlock.
The earthing switches are operated by a snap action mechanism, which ensures fast closing. The earthing switch is closed
by turning the operating handle clockwise. Turning the operating handle anti-clockwise opens the switch.
An anti-reflex system, standard on all operating handles, prevents the immediate re-operation of switches.
If an additional trip coil is installed in the cable switch module, push-buttons are also mounted on the system.
The switch-disconnector is only switched after pressing these buttons. The spring is always tensioned by turning the
operating handle from position 0 to I (i.e. clockwise) if you want to switch on. From position I to position 0 (i.e. counter-
clockwise) to switch off.

• Cable connector dismounted from the switchgear. 5. Remove the earth triangle and perform the test. Re-
spect maximum test voltage levels as detailed in table
below. Recommended test values can be applied with
busbars energized.
6. Refit the earth triangle. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
DANGER - remember that the cable has two ends.
7. Disconnect test equipment.
Both ends of the cable need to be isolated. This is
typically done by opening the disconnectors of
SafeRing SafePlus switchgears connected to the
cable. The free end of the tested cable needs to be
secured against accidental access.

19.3 End-of-life
ABB Electrification Products Division is committed to the protection of the environment and follows the ISO 14001 standard.
It is our obligation to assure environmentally clean processes, high recyclablity and facilitate end-of-life recycling for our
products. The switchgear contains SF6 gas with a high global warming potential and the gas must not be released to the
atmosphere. The switchgear is marked with a SF6 Global Warming label.
ABB’s handling and recycling services are in accordance with IEC 62271-4 for end of life of SF6 filled equipment.

Working area:
Work place:
Responsible Person: Activity: Handling of uncontaminated SF6
Sign
SF6 is approximately five times heavier than air, and can accumulate in low-lying spaces. If a
large quan -tity escapes into the working environment, SF6 displaces the oxygen in the air
people breathe (danger of asphyxiation). SF6 is a greenhouse gas, and emissions of SF6 are
therefore to be avoided.
PROTECTIVE MEASURES AND RULES OF BEHAVIOUR
Protect your hands: Wear protective gloves to avoid physical injury and contact with
liquid gas.
Leakage: Turn off the gas supply. Ensure that necks and connections are tight and
ventilate the room well with fresh air.
SF6 does not burn, but fire will create decomposition products. Wear protective
equipment when firefighting.
Move cylinders/equipment out of the hazard zone or cool them.
FIRST AID
For all first aid actions: Ensure that you yourself are adequately protected, and contact a
doctor immediately.
On inhalation: Provide fresh air immediately. Lay the person in an inclined position with
the head downwards, and if they have breathing problems ensure they receive medical
treatment.

FIRST AID
− When decomposition products come into contact with the skin or eyes, immediately
rinse the skin with ample water,
− Thoroughly rinse the eye with water, covering the unaffected eye.
− Move persons with breathing difficulties out of the hazardous area into the fresh
air, ensure they rest, cover them with blankets and call in a doctor (risk of toxic
pulmonary oedema).
