Blank Scores
Two blank scores are provided. Use Finale’s Document Setup Wizard and reproduce each
score exactly (no added notes required). You will need to create a separate le for each score;
save each le as YourLastName_Notation01a and YourLastName_Notation01b. (Please see the
Canvas assignment folder for links to Finale tutorials that can assist you with this assignment.)
Score Setup Instructions
• Open Finale, go to the Launch Window and click the Setup Wizard. If you don’t see the
Launch Window when you open the program, you can go to the File menu and chose
the Launch Window from there.
• In the rst window (Select Ensemble and Document Style), select the Create New Ensem-
ble, then click Next.
• In the second window, select the appropriate instruments for the rst score and then
click Next. Repeat this process when working on the second score.
• In the third window (Score Information), add the following then click Next:
- Title: My First Score
- Subtitle: Notation 01a (for the Super Fun Score) and Notation 01b (for the Super Silly
Song Without Words)
- Composer: Your Name
• In the fourth window (Score Settings), select the proper time and key signatures for each
score (3/4, A major for 1a and 6/8, Eb major for 1b) and check the box for Specify Initial
Tempo Marking and type the proper metronome marking in the tempo eld, then specify
the proper number of measures. Then, click Finish.
• If there are too many measures at the end, change to the Selection Tool then control-click
(or right-click) the nal measure and choose “Delete Measure Stack” or just select the -
nal measure and hit the Delete key.
• Go to the le menu and choose “Save.”

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Create a third score identical to the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star example. Try
a variety of note input methods if possible. Save this le as YourLast-
Name_Notation01c.

- Highlight a note: hold the “option” (or “alt”) key while you click the note
- Switch octaves: select the note and use shift + up/down arrows
- Change note duration: select the note and use opt+[1-8] to change its duration
- Triplets: use the triplet tool or the number 9 to add triplets (type “9” after you add
the rst note of the triplet).
- Ties: use the letter T to add a tie to a note when in Simple Entry mode.
Articulations, Expressions, and Smart Shapes
• Articulation Tool
- Enable the Articulation Tool
- Click a note that needs adjusting then choose the appropriate articulation
- Use the Metatool shortcut
‣ hold down the shortcut key (S for staccato) then click on a note or click-drag to
select a group of notes
‣ alternately, to repeat the same shortcut on different notes, hold down the hyphen
key and select
• Expression Tool
- Click on the Expression Tool
- Double-click on a note to open the Expression Selection window
- Click "Dynamics" in the left-side menu
- Double-click on your selection to add it to your note
- Try the Metatool shortcut
‣ hold down the shortcut key then click on a note or select a group of notes
- To add the “molto rit.” use the Tempo Alteration link in the Expression window
Smart Shape Tool
• Slurs & Crescendo
- choose the appropriate tool
- double-click under the rst note and drag to the nal note
Page Layout
• Adjust the number of measures per line as shown in the score
• Highlight a measure using the Selection Tool, then use the arrow keys to move one or
more measures up or down a line
Save & Upload
• Save your les and upload to Canvas
