PIAGGIO GROUP HISTORY

• 1887 – 1889
Rinaldo Piaggio creates Piaggio & C, the principal activity being into ship interiors. The
Company acquires a new workshop at Finale Marina and debuts into the railroad sector.

• 1916
Aeronautical production begins. Rinaldo Piaggio takes on engineers Giovanni Pegna and
Giuseppe Gabrielli and assigns them the task of producing first prototype of the aircraft
“Rondine” (Swallow).

• 1924 – 1937
Acquisition of the Pontedera plant; the company begins producing its own patented motors.
Piaggio begins to produce a wide range of products for the transport sector: cable cars, funicular
railways, trailers, trams, trucks and buses.

• 1946
The first Vespa prototype is produced in Pontedera and marketed immediately. After a somewhat
tepid initial response from the market, sales begin to take off and soon the product is an
unprecedented success.

• 1948
1948 is the year of Ape, a key contributor to the resumption of commercial activity in the period of
national reconstruction.

• 1964 – 1969
Piaggio assumes control of Gilera di Arcore, one of the oldest motorcycle houses in Europe, famous
particularly for its achievements in the sports arena.

• 1973 - 1988
The Bravo motorcycle is introduced and production of tractors begins. Following the acquisition of
Bianchi in 1981, Piaggio introduces new vehicles such as Cosa, Superbravo, Grillo, and ApeCar D,
all launched between 1987 and 1988.

• 1990 - 1994
Sfera, the first scooter with plastic bodywork, is produced in Pontedera.

• 1996 – 1997
To mark the 50th anniversary of Vespa’s creation by Enrico Piaggio and Corradino D'Ascanio, the
new Vespa is launched in 1996.

 VESPA STORY
The origins ‘The Piaggio company was
founded in Genoa in 1984, by twenty
year old Rinaldo Piaggio. It moved
from timber machining to the
production of ship fittings and later,
aeroplanes and seaplanes, built at that
time in wood and canvas, first at the
finale ligure factory and subsequently
in Pontedera, Piaggio became one of
the country’s largest airfraft
manufactures, for this reason, the
finale and pontedera plants were
considered strategic targets and were
bombed during WorldWar II’
The Birth of The Legend ‘He
eliminated the drive chain, with the
wheel driven directly from the
transmission, put the gear lever on
the handlebar, besigned a
monocoque frame and enclosed
bodywork to protect the rider.’
The Invention ‘In 1946, as Italy
embarked on postwar
reconstruction, the rebuilding of
the main Pontedera factory was
assigned to one of Rinaldo’s two
sons, Enrico, who opted for a full
conversion focusing on personal
mobility. He achieved his ambition,
a stylish vehicle for the mass
market. Thanks to the
exteaordinary design work of his
most talented aeronautical
engineer:Corradiano D’Ascanio.’
