LEARNING OUTLINE

1. Put pupils in small groups.


PRE-LESSON

2. ABCs Game: Orally, give pupils a letter of the alphabet and a topic (e.g. M; Animals).
3. Pupils work in their groups to write one (or more) animal word beginning with letter M. (e.g. monkey).
4. Give a very short time limit, e.g. 10 seconds.
5. Repeat a few times. Have groups share their answers with the class.
6. Activity 1:
a. Pupils look at the animals in the box. (Think! SB pg34)
b. Ask: Which animals do you think are ugly? Is there another animal you think is ugly?
c. Accept L1 and translate.
7. Activity 2:
a. Write on board: protect, species, become extinct, danger, help, rare.
b. Pupils use dictionaries or explain the meanings. (DS)
c. Read out the sentences and check that pupils understand everything. (Activity 1)
d. Read out the question and point out to pupils that for this task they need to think about the writer’s point of
view.
e. Pupils read the text and answer the question. They can compare their ideas in pairs.

g. CCE: Environmental Sustainability – Ask pupils why it is important to protect animal.
8. Activity 3:
a. Read through the sentences with the class and make sure pupils understand rare.
b. Pupils read the text again and identify true or false statements.
c. Check and discuss the answers.
9. Activity 4:
a. Pupils guess the meanings of words in blue from the context, and then check with a partner. (Assessment)
b. They can use a dictionary or other resources if there are any words they are unsure of.
c. Pupils now use dictionaries to check ‘common’ and ‘dull’.
d. Ask: Which word in blue is the opposite of dull? (colourful).
e. Also, check they remember the meaning of. ‘rare’ (from Activity 3).
f. Pupils read the text again and say the two words that come before beautiful, interesting, common and colourful
(the most).
g. They find the word before ugliest, rarest, biggest, weirdest (the).
h. Ask pupils if they enjoyed reading the text and why. (Assessment)
