SAMPLE PROBLEM:
1. We get a plastic tank with a volume of 1m3 and we fill it up with sand. We start adding water to
the tank and the voids within the sand start to fill up with water. We continue adding water until
the water reaches the top of the tank (without overflowing). In total, we added 330 L of water.
What is the porosity of that specific sand?

GIVEN: Conversion of Liter to m ³

330 L( 1m 1000L)= 0.33 m ³
Vv= 330 L= 0.330 m3
VT= 1 m3

SOLUTION:
n= VV / VT
= 0.330/1
n = 0.33
𝑛 = 𝑆𝑦 + 𝑆𝑟
𝑛 = 𝑆𝑦 + 𝑆𝑟
Sample Problem.
1. In an area of 100 ha, the water table
dropped by 4.5 m. If the porosity is
30% and the specific retention is 10%
determine the specific yield of the
aquifer.

Given:
n= 30% or 0.30 Sr= 10% or 0.10

Solution:
n= Sy + Sr
0.30= Sy + 0.20
= 0.30 – 0.10
Sr= 0.2
