Hot Rods and Gun Bunnies debuted 20 years ago as the action-adventure expansion for BESM First Edition. Gamers
love equipping their characters with sleek weapons, after all, and 90s anime was rife with guns and cars. BESM was never
intended to offer super-crunchy game mechanic options, and this core framework carries through all editions. There’s a
lot of imprecision and hand-waiving with BESM weapons – though we view it as a feature, not a bug.
It doesn’t need to be like this, though. The Guide to Modern Firearms demonstrates BESM Fourth Edition’s weapon
potential with excellence.
I’ll admit that my knowledge of guns is primarily of the cinematic variety, with no practical real-world exposure.
There is an astounding amount of information in this book that makes it easy for players to up their game when
incorporating modern firearms in their anime and manga adventures. The writing and game stats stay true to BESM’s
core rules-light philosophy, yet offers more detail and accuracy at the same time. For weapon aficionados, you could say
it’s an ideal balance around the gaming table.
The Guide to Modern Firearms is a prime example of why Dyskami Publishing created the Tri-Stat Emporium
community content programme on DriveThruRPG. We wanted to make it easy to unlock a wealth of creative potential,
and get these types of BESM game expansions into your hands. I am confident you’re going to love pouring over these

100+ pages as you outfit your characters.

On a more personal note, The Guide to Modern Firearms has made a tremendous impact on my family.
In late 2019, my wife, Karen, was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. This disease has been incredibly
stressful for Karen and our family, and she is doing her best to remain positive and keep hopeful during her treatment
regimen. Since Karen is unable to continue working in her nursing profession – especially during the COVID-19
pandemic, with her compromised immune system – there are additional stresses related to Karen’s eliminated employment
income and increased family medical expenses.
Though Karen is a complete stranger to him, this books creator and author, Magavarico, donated his hard work on
the project to Karen after she made her battle with cancer public. Magavarico showed Karen and my family incredible
kindness and compassion by encouraging Karen to publish The Guide to Modern Firearms under her Just Honey Badger
It imprint on the Emporium. All proceeds from the sale of this book are supporting Karen and our family, and I thank
you so very much on all our behalf.

BESM Guide to Modern Firearms

A GUIDE TO MODERN FIREARMS

Guns & Anime go together like Hot Rods & Gun Bunnies; whether it’s modern military, zombie survival,
post-apocaliptic horror, or any other genre - guns just belong. There are a few other games that have guides to

All templates in this guide are usable just as they are, but they may not be exactly what you want. Maybe
you want a scope? Maybe you want to use a variation of standard ammunition, or maybe you want to remove
something and see how much you can reduce your cost? This chapter covers the accessories, defects, and

CARTRIDGES & FIREARMS

When it comes down to it, the cartridge is the center of the firearm, so it stands to reason that the
Weapon Attribute should be built around the cartridge. It made sense, then, that this guide should be organized
by cartridge size - increasing from a small .17 HMR caliber to the grand-daddy .50 cal! You may find - however
- that some hairs had to be split while others were left alone. For example, the guide differentiates the 9mm
Makarov (9x18) and 9mm (9x19); but not the 9mm 125gr (9x19) and 9mm Luger 115gr (9x19). If you have no
idea what all this means, that’s okay! Knowledge in firearms is not required to use this guide. Find something
you like and run with it!

but - in truth - the guide was not meant to be all-
encompassing - it was meant to be substantial
enough that the reader has a good variety to
choose from, and a good basis to go on when
designing their own.

RE-SKINNING
The most important tool you can take with
you in any game is the ability to re-skin. No
rulebook tells you - nor should ever tell you -
how to think, how to imagine, or how to envision.
Each of these entries are guidelines to emulate
real world weapons into an imaginary game;
but what if you disagree with an entry and feel

Reading an Entry
the weapon (as entered in here) should actually
behave differently? Or perhaps you have
another weapon in mind, but it is not listed? Or
maybe you have a completely fictional weapon
in mind? Re-skin it! Re-skin it! Re-skin it!
If you think the P90 should be more like an
AK-47, buy the AK and call it the P90 (make it
pink and call it “P-Chan”)! Like the look of the
Laugo Alien but want it in a .50 AE? Take the
.50 AE and say it looks like the Alien.
Each of these entries takes a - virtually
infinite - range of variables such as velocity,
weight, and design, and compresses
them to a few intervals of damage and
penetration. Be reasonable with
the guide, with the game, and
with the GM; but most of
all, be reasonable
with yourself -
give yourself the
freedom to imagine.

STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE

It’s a common phrase, and is very applicable
here. Anime is often less about power and more
about style. Sure the .300 Winchester has a
a good power-for-price value, but the Walther
PPK has style. Spike Speigle from Cowboy
Bebop uses a simple Jericho 941 chambered
in 9mm - not a .50 Desert Eagle. Rather than
going for broke, sometimes, you just have to
ask yourself, “What would my character use?
What’s my character’s style?”
But, then again, sometimes the character
calls for Alucard’s 13mm Jackal (Hellsing). If
your character means “power is style”, you’re
limited only by your Points.

7MM MEDIUM
15
The 7.62 had a lot of promise for the British, 7MM MEDIUM
but it failed in the trials to become a NATO .220 Russian
round. However the British still saw potential 6mm Remington
and bottle-necked the 7.62 down to 7mm, .243 Winchester
but by then it had too much recoil compared 5.45 Soviet
to the competitors. In the end, it only found .221 Fireball
use in Venezuela in 1954 for the 1953 Belgian .256 Winchester Magnum
FN FAL selective fire which quickly gained .223 Armalite (5.56 NATO)
popularity in other cartridges leaving the 7mm .224 Valkyrie
Medium in obscurity. However, so much of this 6.5mm Grendel

Some call the 7.5 FK BRNO (Bruno) the 7.5 FK

Surely the cartridge is fast at about 2,000fps, 6mm Remington
but the .221 Fireball hits around 2,500. Seeing .243 Winchester
as how the .221 uses a more narrow spitzer 5.45 Soviet

.300 WINCHESTER MAGNUM

25
While the .30-06 was the “all-American” .300 WINCHESTER
cartridge for generations, the market has
become flooded with a “cartridge for everything”.
MAGNUM
This gave the .300 Winchester Magnum many .300 Winchester Magnum
competitors, but its price and availability in 7mm Remington Magnum
popular guns allowed it to endure. Essentially
a .308 with a very large casing, .300 WM has LEVEL POINTS ATTRIBUTE
taken the torch from the .30-06 as the all- 11(5) 22 Penetrating -2, Range -4
purpose cartridge from small game to the Big-
.300 Winchester Magnum

Five. The .300 WM has drawn some criticism,

but it seems these issues are disproven on many
levels. For example, there is the unnecessary
belt on the casing (normally required to prevent
over-insertion into the chamber), for which
there is no real answer other than the fact that
it had been a magnum standard since the .375
H&H from which the cartridge is based.
There is also criticism of the short neck
design on the casing which - some claim - can
lead to inaccuracy by design. The .300 WM’s
track record and performance have, since,
disproven this. There is something to be said
about a cartridge that can consistently hit a
grouping the size of a quarter at 900-yards -
one of the reasons it is a sniper favorite.

Getting the obvious question out of the way, 8MM MANNLICHER
yes - it is pronounced “man-licker”, named .220 Russian

made more sense than a 7+1 1911 firing .45’s
since some of the power of the .45 was lost in

In the civilian world, the .38 is still enjoyed in

be attributed to film and nostalgia. If it was a

CHIAPPA M6 X-CALIBER
FEATURED FIREARM
Dubbed the “Ideal Zombie Apocalypse Gun”,
the Chiappa M6 X-Caliber is a foldable breach-
loader 12-Gauge shotgun with a .22 LR lower
barrel. It has eight barrel adapters that drop
right into the 12-Gauge chamber allowing the
firearm to be instantly chambered in 13 different
pistol & shotgun cartridges. In an environment
where ammunition is rare, it is convenient to be
FEATURE: M6 X-Caliber

able to fire any ammunition you can find.

The Alt-munition method is expensive and
you still do not have access to ammo variants,
but you will be able to change cartridges at will
- assuming you have those cartridges on-hand.
Weapon Attributes that do the exact same thing
were emulated by taking a single “Feature”
point (pay for the convenience). Ask your DM
if you even need to go that far. Power Variation
will be a much cheaper alternative, and you will
have access to all ammo variants, but you will
be limited to changing cartridge type to once
per minute or dramatic scene.
A low-cost beginner alternative would be to
purchase the basic gun (below), then build your
adapter set as you gain points, but as you buy
pricier cartridges, remember to switch which
cartridge is your primary and which are your
Alt-munition (you pay full price for the most
expensive one). OR you may save until you
have 10 more points and switch to the Power
Variation Method getting everything at once
(you “found” or “made” an adapter set)!
