Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION Time to explore the microcosm in detail! With an emphasis on organic chemistry, this
unit of study is essential in helping you understand the human condition at a cellular
level. The unit describes the structure of chemical substances and interactions of these
substances as they relate to biochemical processes within the human body.

LEARNING 144 hours

HOURS
Self Directed Learning
Components of these units require self directed study where students will perform
research and or set tasks followed by reviews promoting learning engagement, debate
and group discussion.

LEARNING By the conclusion of these Units of Study, students should be able to:
OUTCOMES 1. Explain the types and components of matter and the principles of their
interaction.
2. Explain the interaction between particles and their consequences, in particular
for living organisms.
3. Explain the basic principles of organic chemistry and identify the range of
compounds and their involvement in biomedical reactions.
4. Identify structural components of chemical compounds relevant to biochemical
reactions.
5. Describe cellular reproduction in the human body.
6. Explain the effect of diet on metabolism.
7. Describe chemical and biochemical reactions in metabolism.
8. Identify the toxic effects of chemical compounds.
9. Describe the role of kidneys and liver in metabolism

ASSESSMENT The units are assessed via:

Mid term quiz
End of term quiz
Refer to Assessment Procedures and Assessment Tasks for full details

COMPETENCIES Successful completion of assessment tasks for this unit satisfy the following Health
Training Package HLT07 Units of Competency:

HLTAP501C - Analyse Health Information (Partial)
