Sensors
Transmission Oil Temperature

Illustration 2 g01405330

The transmission oil temperature sensor is a PWM sensor that is mounted on the bottom of the valve group of
the transmission. This sensor indicates the temperature of the lubricating oil that is supplied to the
transmission in order to protect the transmission against overheating. The sensor has an operating temperature
range of 40 °C (104 °F) to 120 °C (248 °F). This sensor is an input to the Chassis ECM. The sensor is used to
adjust the time for shifting of the transmission, during transmission calibrations and for the derate cycle. The
ECM also monitors the circuit for this sensor. If the duty cycle of this sensor is too high or too low, the ECM
logs a diagnostic code for the sensor circuit.

Torque Converter Oil Temperature

Illustration 3 g01405327

This sensor is a passive analog sensor that is located at the torque converter output. The sensor is used to
drive the torque converter temperature gauge in the instrument cluster. If the ECM determines the resistance
of this sensor is too high or too low, the ECM logs a diagnostic code for the sensor.

Transmission Input Speed

Illustration 4 g01405337

The transmission input speed sensor is a frequency sensor that is located on the transmission inlet. The
frequency of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the transmission inlet. The sensor is used for
controlling the transmission clutches. The sensor is also used in the transmission calibrations.

Transmission Output 1 and Transmission Output 2

Illustration 5 g01405341

The transmission output speed sensors are frequency sensors that are located near the transmission output
shaft. The frequency (output) of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the transmission output shaft. Each
sensor measures the speed of the shaft. The sensors (used in combination) provide the directional information
related to the shaft. The sensors are used for controlling the transmission clutches. The sensors are also used
in the transmission calibrations. A diagnostic code is activated in the event of a failure with one of the
sensors.

The "Transmission Intermediate Speed" sensor is a frequency sensor that is located near the intermediate
shaft of the transmission. The frequency of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the intermediate shaft of
the transmission. The sensor measures the speed of the shaft. The signal from the sensor is used by the
Chassis ECM to control the transmission clutches.

Switches
Starter Keyswitch

Illustration 7 g02154595

Starter Key Switch

The key start switch is an input of the Chassis ECM. The switch connects to connector contact J1-1. The
switch tells the ECM that the operator wants to start the engine. The ECM then initiates the neutral start
function. See Systems Operation, "Neutral Start Function" for more information. The signal is open during
normal operation. When the key start switch is in the START position, the switch will close to the +battery
circuit.

The switch has four terminals. Terminal "S" connects to the ECM. Terminal "B" connects to battery voltage.
Terminal "R" connects to the main relay.

Note: After the switch is initially turned to the START position, the switch will not return to the START
position from the ON position. The switch must be turned to the OFF position. The switch can then be turned
to the START position.

The ECM does not record diagnostic codes that occur with the key start switch.

The "Transmission Oil Level" switch is a single-pole single-throw switch which changes states when the oil
level drops below a certain level.

The "Transmission Oil Level " switch is located in the transmission oil tank. This switch monitors the level of
transmission oil. The operator is warned when the level of the oil is too low. The switch is configured such
that a GROUND signal indicates that is oil level is low. An OPEN circuit through the switch indicates that
the oil level is OK.

The transmission oil level is monitored by the Chassis ECM via the "Transmission Oil Level " switch. The
Chassis ECM broadcasts the status of the transmission oil level over the Cat Data Link (CDL).

Transmission Charge Filter Bypass Switch

Illustration 14 g01405358

The bypass switch is a pressure switch that shows whether the filter is plugged. If the filter is plugged, the
switch bypasses the filter. The switch is normally open. When electrical power is applied to the switch, the
switch closes. When the filter becomes plugged, the pressure of the oil opens the switch which allows the oil
to bypass the filter.

The switch is one of the inputs that is used to drive the system indicator on the instrument cluster. The
indicator is turned ON when the "Transmission Filter Bypass" switch is in the closed position and the
temperature of the transmission oil is greater than 50° C (122° F) with the engine running.
