I. Let U = {a, b, c, d, … , x, y, z}, A = {a,n,g,e,r}, F = {f,e,a,r} and P = {p,r,i,d,e}. Find the

following elements.
1. A ∩ F' =(n , g)
2. F ∪ P=( f , e , a , r , p , i , d)
3. P−F=( p ,i , d)
4. ( F ∪ A )' =( f , e , a , r , n , g)
5. ( A ∪ P ) −( F ∩ P )=( a , n , g , e , r , p ,i , d )−( r , e )=(a , n , g , p ,i , d)

II. A survey of engineering students revealed the following information:

51 liked LA Lakers, 49 liked Golden State Warriors and 60 liked Houston Rockets.
34 liked the LA Lakers and the GSW, 32 liked the LA Lakers and the Houston Rockets,
36 liked the Houston Rockets and the GSW, 26 liked the three teams, and 6 does not like
any of the three teams.
1. How many students were surveyed? 51+99+60+6= 166
2. How many liked the Lakers or the GSW? 51+99=100
3. How many liked exactly one of the three teams? 11+5+18=34

III.Identify the type of set (finite, infinite or empty) as described by the following:
1. A = {stars in the galaxy} INFINITE 4. G = {a, b, . . ., x, y, z} FINITE
2. F = {0} FINITE 5. D = {x/x > 2, x < 1} FINITE
3. H = {Greek letters} FINITE

IV. Convert the following decimal numbers to binary numbers or vice versa.
1. 237 = 11101101 4. 110112 = 27
2. 159 = 10011111 5. 10101102 = 86
3. 1250 = 10011100010

V. Given the function f ( x )=3 x 3−2 x+1 and g ( x ) =5 x −3 , find the following:

2. f ( x )+ g ( x) 1. g(f ( x)) 3. f (2)2−g (2)3

VI. Logic.
Let p, q , r be propositions. p = it is raining; q = the sun is shining; r = there are clouds
in the sky
1. Translate: (p v q) → r̴ into English statement.

If it’s raining or the sun is shining, then there are no clouds in the sky.

2. Construct its truth table.

p q pvq ~r (pvq) ~r
T T T F F
T F T F F
F T T T T
F F F T T

3. Determine whether it is tautology, contradiction or contingent; valid or not valid.

The statement is CONTINGENT and NOT VALID.
