Introduction to Project Management

Objectives

• Identify the characteristics of a project


• Assess the need for project management
• Analyze the ways groups are organized into projects
Question:

Should the project team use a different method like


focus groups and interviews to collect ideas?
Good ideas are crucial to project success. It would make
sense to inform the project sponsor that you want to make
adjustments.

Quality is often a key factor in projects, as in customer or


sponsor satisfaction.

In fact, some refer to quadruple constraint of project


management.
How can you avoid the problems that occur when
you meet scope, time, and cost goal, but lose
sight of quality or customer satisfaction?

The answer is good project management which


includes more than meeting the triple constraint.
Project Stakeholders

Stakeholders are the people involved in or affected by


project activities and include the project sponsor,
project team, support staff, customers, users,
suppliers, and even the opponents of the projects.

For example, building a new house is an example of a


project. There are several stakeholders involved in a
home construction project.

• Project Sponsors would be the potential


homeowner
• The Project Manager would normally be the
general contractor responsible for building the
house
• The Project Team would include the construction
workers, electricians, carpenters, and so on
Project Stakeholders

• Support Staff might include the buyer’s employers,


the general contractor’s admin staff, and other
people who support other stakeholders
• The Suppliers would provide the wood, windows,
flooring materials, appliances and so on
• Opponents might be a neighbor who opposes the
construction or project

PM Knowledge Areas

PM Knowledge areas describe the key competencies


that project managers must develop.

The four core knowledge areas are project scope,


time, cost, and quality management.

They lead to specific project objectives.


PM Knowledge Areas

• Project Scope Management involves defining and


managing all the work required to complete the project
successfully

• Project Time Management includes estimating how long


it will take to complete the work, developing an
acceptable project schedule, and ensuring timely
completion of the project

• Project Cost Management consists of preparing and


managing the budget for the project

• Project Quality Management ensures that the project


will satisfy the stated or implied needs for which it was
undertaken
PM Knowledge Areas

The four facilitating knowledge areas of PM are


human resource, communications, risk, and
procurement management.

They are the processes through which the project


objectives are achieved.

• Project Human Resource Management is concerned


with making effective use of the people involved in the
project

• Project Communications Management involves


generating, collecting, disseminating, and storing project
information
PM Knowledge Areas

• Project Risk Management includes identifying, analyzing,


and responding to risks related to the project

• Project Procurement Management involves acquiring or


procuring goods and services for a project from outside
the performing organization
PM Knowledge Areas

• Project integration management, the ninth knowledge


area, is an overarching function that affects and is
affected by all of the other knowledge areas.

Project management tools and techniques assist


project managers and their teams in carrying out work
in all nine knowledge areas.
For example, some popular time management tools
and techniques include Gantt charts, project network
diagrams, and critical
path analysis.
Activity 1 (Max of 3):

• Find any example of a real project with a real project


manager. Feel free to use projects in the media (the
Olympics, television shows, movies, etc.) or a project from
your work, if applicable.
Activity 1 (Max of 3):

• Write a 200 word paper describing the project in terms of


its scope, time, and cost goals. Discuss what went right
and wrong on the project and the role of the project
manager and sponsor. Also describe if the project was a
success or not and why. Include at least one reference and
cite it on the last part.

• Present your work in class.
