UNIT 4: THE SPHERE

A sphere is a solid bounded by a closed surface

every point of which is equidistant from a fixed
point called the center.

Area = area of 4 great circles

S = 4 p R2

Volume = 4/3 p R3
THE SPHERE

A right circular cone is inscribed in a sphere. If the slant

height of the cone has a length equal to that of its
diameter, find the length of the
a) Radius of the base of the cone.
b) Altitude of the cone.
THE SPHERE

Solution:
a) Let r be the radius of the base of the cone.

Then
o
r=6 cos 30 =3 √ 3in.
THE SPHERE

SOLUTION:
b) For the altitude h of the cone, h= 6 + x,
where x is the side of the smaller triangle.

x= 6 sin 30o =3 in.

Thus, the altitude of the

cone is h= 6+3 =9 in.
