1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

The Contractor is responsible for the performance of all tests and

inspection required by this Standard Specification. However, the Owner
reserves the right to perform any or all prescribed tests and inspection
where such is deemed necessary to ensure that delivered materials
conform to the specifications, and shall be paid for by the Contractor.
The Contractor shall furnish the Owner certified copies of records
showing that each material has been pre-tested, and complied with all
applicable requirements of this Standard. The Contractor shall, at his
own expense, replace all rejected materials for failure to comply with this
Specification.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Structural rolled shapes, unless otherwise noted, shall conform to the

requirements of JIS Specifications.

B. Plates, bars and built-up sections, unless otherwise noted, shall

conform to the requirements of ASTM A36.

C. Welding rods shall conform to AWS A5.1.

D. Bolts Steel Connections shall conform to ASTM A325, unless

otherwise shown on drawings.

E. Anchor Bolts shall conform to ASTM A307 unless otherwise shown

on drawings.

F. Specialty High Strength Anchor Bolts, as indicated on the drawings,

shall conform to the manufacturer’s specifications with approval of the
Engineer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 SHOP PAINTING (WHERE APPLICABLE)

A. All steel work shall be prepared, primed and painted in the shop prior
to erection. All surfaces shall be cleaned of dirt, rust and mill scale.

B. Paints used for both primer and finish coats shall be two-component
epoxy-based and shall be obtained from the same manufacturer.
The Contractor shall submit samples of all paints he proposes to use
to the Engineer for approval. The Engineer will select the color of the
finish coats.

C. All painting work shall be carried out in accordance with the

manufacturer's recommendation in a clean, dust-free environment
with temperature and humidity controlled to comply with these
specifications and the recommendations of the paint manufacturer.
All the surrounding work shall be protected in a suitable manner from
paint drops and overspray. All smeared and damaged surfaces shall
be cleaned or repaired to the satisfaction of the Engineer.

3.2 FABRICATION AND ERECTION

A. All Structural Steel shall be fabricated and erected in accordance

with the AISC Specifications (9th edition) and code of standard
practice as amended to date.

All members shall fit closely together and shall be straight and true;
the finished work shall be free from burrs, bends, twists and open
joints.

Welding electrodes shall be E70XX, and in accordance with AWS

Standards.

B. All holes, angles, supports, and braces shall be provided as required.

Any unmatched holes in shop assembly of field connections shall be
reamed and the pieces match marked before disassembly.

Drift pins shall be used only for bringing members into position and
not to enlarge or distort holes.

Any piece weakened by reaming to compensate for eccentricity to a

point where the strength of the joint is impaired will be rejected and a
new and satisfactory piece shall be provided by the Contractor at his
own expense.

Slotted holes and washers shall be provided for truing-up steel

requiring accurate alignment.

C. Anchor bolts shall be accurately located on the base plates and

welded in position.

3.3 FIELD CONNECTION

Base plates where required shall be accurately placed in position.

Field connections shall be made by welding or high strength bolting.

Field welding shall not be allowed except for tank shells and as
approved by the Engineer.

3.4 WELDING

Welding of parts shall be in accordance with the Structural Welding

Code D1.1 of the AWS and shall only be done by welders certified as to
their ability to perform welding in accordance with the locally accepted
requirements.

The Contractor may substitute field bolting where field welding is shown,
provided bolting details have been approved by the Engineer.

3.5 BOLTING

A. High-strength connection bolts shall conform to ASTM A325.

B. Anchor bolts shall be A307 steel unless otherwise shown on drawings

with hexagonal nuts. Threads shall be clean cut and conform to ISO
261. Anchor bolts shall be hot-dip galvanized and shall be accurately
set before the concrete is poured unless specifically permitted
otherwise by the Engineer. To facilitate the setting of anchor bolts,
