DESCRIBING A PHOTO
 This photograph refers to the
eruption of Guagua Pichincha,
which is the most active
volcano in the Western
Ecuadorian Andes.
 This volcano with a height of
4,784 meters; the image

records its last eruption,
which occurred on October 7
1999, and generated a cloud
of ash and volcanic gases that
rose to a height of several
kilometers.
 The eruption affected the city
of Quito, which is located
about 15 kilometers east of
the volcano. Volcanic ash and
gases covered a large part of
the city, affecting the local
population and economy.
 There were no direct fatalities
from the eruption, but it did
cause the evacuation of
around 100,000 people.
