FILIPINO WRITERS UNDER US COLONIALISM

SPANISH
Claro M. Recto (February 8, 1890- October 2, 1960)
A noted lawyer, Congressman, Senator, nationalist statesman, and regarded as the Father
of the 1935 Constitution, was born in Tiaong, Tayabas (present-day Quezon province) to
Don Claro Recto, Sr. of Rosario Batangas and Doña Micaela Mayo of Lipa.
Title of his works

 "Bajos Los Cocoteros" (Under the Coconut Trees, 1911), a collection of his poems in
Spanish.
 "La Ruta de Damasco" (The Route to Damascus, 1918)
 "Solo entre las Sombras" (Alone among the Shadows, 1917),
Fernando Ma. Guerrero (May 30, 1873- June 12, 1929)
active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when Spanish was still widely
used in Philippine literature and intellectual discourse despite the increasing influence of
English under American rule. He was known for his lyrical poetry, which often celebrated
Filipino heritage, nature, and patriotism.

Faustino S. Aguilar (February 15, 1882 – July 24, 1955)
a pioneering Filipino novelist, journalist, revolutionary, union leader, and editor. Faustino was
one of the first novelists in the Philippines to explore and present social realism through
literature. He was also said that he is the editor of Taliban

Lope K. Santos (September 25, 1879-May 1, 1963)
Was a Filipino Tagalog language writer and former senator of the Philippines. He is best
known for his 1906 socialist novel. Also known as Ama ng Wikang Pambansa at Balarila ng
Pilipinas

Nick Joaquin (May 4, 1917- April 29, 2004)
regarded by many as the most distinguished Filipino writer in English writing so variedly and
so well about so many aspects of the Filipino. Nick Joaquin has also enriched the English
language with critics coining “Joaquinesque” to describe his baroque Spanish-flavored
English or his reinventions of English based on Filipinisms.

Paz Marquez-Benitez (March 3, 1894- November 10, 1983)

Interview an elementary teacher who has taught or is teaching MTB as a learning area

1. Advantages of teaching MTB as a subject for both students and teachers?


Teaching a mother tongue as a subject can provide several advantages for both learners
and teachers. Advantages for Learners: Learning one's mother tongue can improve
language proficiency because according to studies, children can learn easily if we teach
them using their native language. It can also help learners develop a stronger sense of
cultural identity and belonging which in turn bridges the communication gaps between
generations within the family, in school, and within the community. Advantages for Teachers:
Using the mother tongue in instruction makes it easier for the teachers to share their
knowledge and expertise with the learners and others. Through this, they get to improve
their native language proficiency. It can also be a personally fulfilling experience, as it
involves passing on cultural heritage and language traditions to the next generation. In
addition, it can be a career opportunity for them if they would decide to pursue higher
education related to the language.
2. Challenges and problems encountered?
Some problems encountered by the teachers in implementing mother tongue-based
instruction include the absence of books written in the mother tongue, lack of vocabulary,
and lack of teacher training. Some learners were more exposed to multimedia where they
learned the English language better than their language which resulted in low vocabulary
stock. They tend to perform better in English than in mother tongue subjects. Another
problem is that MTB and Filipino have almost the same content making the learners tired of
hearing the same topics.
3. Solutions that have been created so far to address the problems
To address the challenges and problems, the learners are exposed to different learning
materials in their mother tongue/Filipino to enrich their vocabulary. There are also various
intervention plans implemented by the teachers. The same competencies in Filipino Ang
MTB are merged and taught within the same week so that one appears to be an offshoot of
the other.
4. Further recommendations to better achieve the goals of MTB-MLE
Some recommendations to better achieve the goals of MTB include crafting learning
resources and suggesting effective strategies and approaches that can enhance the skills
and knowledge related to the subject area.
