Claro M. Recto (February 8, 1890- October 2, 1960)
A noted lawyer, Congressman, Senator, nationalist statesman, and regarded as the Father
of the 1935 Constitution, was born in Tiaong, Tayabas (present-day Quezon province) to
Don Claro Recto, Sr. of Rosario Batangas and Doña Micaela Mayo of Lipa.
Title of his works
"Bajos Los Cocoteros" (Under the Coconut Trees, 1911), a collection of his poems in
Spanish.
"La Ruta de Damasco" (The Route to Damascus, 1918)
"Solo entre las Sombras" (Alone among the Shadows, 1917),
Fernando Ma. Guerrero (May 30, 1873- June 12, 1929)
active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time when Spanish was still widely
used in Philippine literature and intellectual discourse despite the increasing influence of
English under American rule. He was known for his lyrical poetry, which often celebrated
Filipino heritage, nature, and patriotism.

Was a Filipino Tagalog language writer and former senator of the Philippines. He is best

Nick Joaquin (May 4, 1917- April 29, 2004)
regarded by many as the most distinguished Filipino writer in English writing so variedly and
so well about so many aspects of the Filipino. Nick Joaquin has also enriched the English
language with critics coining “Joaquinesque” to describe his baroque Spanish-flavored
English or his reinventions of English based on Filipinisms.
