1. What do you think about gene therapy?

- Gene therapy is a medical approach that treats or prevents disease by correcting the
underlying genetic problem. Gene therapy techniques allow doctors to treat a disorder by
altering a person’s genetic makeup instead of using drugs or surgery.
- Gene therapy is a form of diagnosis in which one or more reparative genes constructed
in the laboratory are inserted into the genetic information of a patient's cells to heal a
genetically inherited illness. The new gene or genes' expression can then change the
DNA or RNA transcript used to synthesize proteins, reversing the disease. Viruses are
among the most widely used vectors in gene therapy. All viruses connect to their hosts
and inject their genetic information into the host cell as part of their replication process.
As a result, extracting viral DNA and using the virus as a carrier to deliver therapeutic
DNA has been identified as a viable gene therapy technique.
2. Do you think the Food and Drug Administration should or should not approve gene therapy
treatments for use in the Philippines?
- Gene therapy treatments should be approved for use in the Philippines by the Food and
Drug Administration since they can improve the effectiveness of the genetic component
of our medicines in fighting various ailments. In fact, the FDA approved the first gene
treatments for use in the United States in 2017, following considerable study in labs and
human clinical trials around the world. The FDA had approved two gene therapy
medicines as of June 2021. So, in a sense, gene therapy has been demonstrated to be
safe. In the Philippines, approving gene therapy could prevent future generations of a
family from inheriting a genetic condition
3. Do you think the government should or should not fund scientific researches on changing the
genes of unborn babies that aims to improve their characteristics such as intelligence or
physical traits such as athletic ability or appearance?
- Because current scientific techniques are not yet safe or effective enough to create
gene- edited babies, the government should not fund scientific research aimed at
changing the genes of unborn babies in order to improve their characteristics such as
intelligence or physical traits. By eliminating or modifying problematic coding in embryos,
gene editing could potentially help avoid a variety of heritable disorders. Experts are
concerned, however, that altering an embryo's genome could have unexpected
consequences, not only for the individual, but also for future generations who would
inherit the same mutations. Before the government provides funding to scientific
researchers, several recommendations, including significant public discussion, should be
made before a country determines whether or not to allow this form of gene-editing.
