Shading is the process of creating the illusion of form, space, and
light which can make a drawing appear three dimensional. There
are many shading methods that you can use in your drawing.
Now, I want you to read and understand the following techniques
below because you will be applying them later in the succeeding
set of exercises:
1. Start with hatching for a basic shading technique. Hatching
is making a series of parallel lines to simulate shadows in your
drawing. You can space the lines closer together to make darker
shadows or the lines can be spaced further apart to make the area
seem brighter. Hatching lines can be horizontal, vertical, or at an
angle.
2. Use cross-hatching to shade quickly. Cross-hatching builds
onto hatch marks by adding a second layer of lines going at an
opposite direction. This method of shading allows you to make
areas darker quicker than basic hatching.
3. Work with stippling for a stylized look. Stippling is a time-
intensive process of lifting your pencil up and down from the paper
to make a series of dots or short lines on your drawing. Make an
area of your drawing darker by keeping the dots close to one
another.
4. Use blending for a smooth appearance. Blending your
shading gives your drawing a smooth and realistic finish and
requires the most time and technique to do correctly. Shade with
the side of a soft graphite pencil and increase the amount of
pressure you apply to the paper to make transitions between light
and dark values.
This is the process of making marks on the outer parts of the
object, figure, and shape by the use of lines.
Importance of Outlining
The drawn outlines give the viewer an idea on the real look of the
object.
It enables the person to know the object he is doing. It enables
the person prepare the design and to define the shape of a
product they have in mind.
A good design must be enhanced more to be
attractive to customers. As you learned the techniques in
sketching, shading and outlining in grade 4, you will now be able
to apply these in enhancing your finished products.
1. Sketch first your product and follow it with an outline. For
example, draw a bamboo vase.
2. Apply the decorations by drawing the details and start shading
the product. For the bamboo vase, add flowers or leaves on each
container and add beads.
3. Finish shading the rest of the product to see the results.

In connection to this, you can also use another method of

decorating your finished product through outlining or contour
drawing. Contours are the outlines of your drawings. So, in
contour drawing, you will only be drawing the outline of the
subject. Its purpose is to emphasize the mass and volume of the
subject rather than the minor details.
