LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Removing and Replacing Electrical/Electronic Units/Assemblies
(Ignition system and Horn circuit)

Automotive career and service textbook

LEARNERS INFORMATION:

IGNITION SYSTEM – In the spark-ignition engine, the system that furnishes high voltage
spark to the cylinders, at the proper time, to fire the compressed air-fuel mixture in a gasoline
engine 4-stroke cycle.

The ignition system light connection – From the battery positive to primary fuse box to the
ammeter positive sign, and from the negative sign of the ammeter connected to ignition switch B.
ACC and ON terminal in the ignition switch is connected to the secondary fuse.

HORN CIRCUIT – Is a circuit use to warn pedestrian and other motorist. It is also used for
signaling as emergency purposes.

Samples of Automotive Electrical Relay, Fuse, and Breakers

Important steps to consider in auto-electrical wiring:

1. First step in auto-electrical wiring is to check all the location of all accessories, lights, switches,
fuse, relays, gauges, indicators, battery and then lay-out.
2. Compute the length and size of wire to be used.
3. Make a wiring harness for each circuit according to their distance measurement and wire sizes.

2
4. Connect the wiring harness to all circuits.
5. Test the electric circuits.
Procedures in connecting Ignition circuit:
1. Prepare the necessary tools and materials needed.
2. Connect the positive terminal of the battery to ammeter positive (+). The other terminal of the
battery negative (-) is connected to the vehicle body that serve as ground.
3. The negative terminal of the ammeter is connected to the (B) terminal in the ignition switch.
4. ACC/Accessories is connected to the primary fuse.
5. ON is connected to the secondary fuse.
6. STR/Starter switch connection.

Procedures in connecting Horn circuit:

1. Connect a wire to the terminal of horn and other end of wire to the 87 terminal of horn relay. The
other terminal of horn is connected to the vehicle body that serve as ground.

2. Connect the 86 terminal of horn relay to the push button switch. The other terminal of the push
button switch is connected to the ground.

3. Splice the wires of 30 and 85 terminals of horn relay and connect them to the fuse load terminal.
Connect the other end of the fuse source terminal to the IG or ACC terminal of the ignition switch.

4. From the B terminal of the ignition switch, connect a wire to the terminal of the ammeter. The
other terminal wire of the ammeter is connected to the positive (B+) terminal of the battery.

5. Connect the negative terminal of the battery to the vehicle body that serve as ground.

Reminder:
The connection can be made in a reverse manner from step 5 to step 2 except step 6 which is
usually done after checking the wiring connections.
