IODINE TEST FOR CARBOHYDRATES
Name: Escojido, Marela Czyrille Year and Section: BSFT 2-B Activity Conducted (day/month/year): April 17,2024
Activity Submitted (day/month/year): April 24, 2024
GUIDELINES:
 Do not eat or drink any of the materials used in this activity.
 Read and follow all directions for the activity.
 Read all warning labels.
 Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as laboratory gown, gloves etc.
 Tie back long hair, roll up sleeves, and secure loose clothing.
 Be sure to clean up and dispose of materials properly when you are finished with an activity.
 Wash your hands well before and after the activity.
Disposal: Dispose of all solid waste in the trash. The liquids can be safely disposed of down the drain with plenty of
water.

MATERIALS
Food samples
Lugol’s reagent
Distilled water
White cups for samples
Analytical balance/ weighing scale
Dropper
Latex gloves
Tissue

PREPARATION:

1. Prepare 10 different kinds of food samples (it could be liquid or solid).

2. Take 10-20g each sample. Put them in a clean white container. Label each sample.
3. Add 2-3 drops of iodine solution to the sample.
4. Observe the change in color.
5. Write your observations in the activity sheet.

** Paste the photos of the sample before and after mixing the reagent and after heating the sample. Use natural lighting.
Avoid editing the photo. At the bottom, indicate the color of the samples.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Which foods will react to iodine solution? Why do you think so? Explain.

- Baking soda , orange juice, vinegar, yakult and yogurt. Explain: The baking soda has bicarbonate ions and they can
react with the acid in the orange juice, Yakult, and yogurt to make carbon dioxide gas. This gas then mixes with the
iodine solution and they make this blue-black color, showing there's starch

2. Which foods will NOT react to iodine solution? Why do you think so? Explain.

-Bagoong,Milk, Patis, Soy, and Soda Explain: Because they do not contain starch. Iodine solution reacts with starch,
turning it blue-black. Since these substances do not have starch, there will be no color change when iodine solution is
added.

3. Explain the importance of iodine test in research and product development.

-The iodine test is super important in research and product development 'cause it helps spot if there's starch around.
This is big 'cause in research, it can show if something's pure or track chemical stuff with starch. In product making, it
keeps things consistent and good, especially in food where starch can change how things feel, taste, and how healthy
they are.

**REMINDER: In CITING literatures/ references use APA format.

**Put your references at the end of the activity. Alphabetical order.
