Chap-9 Conservation of Plants and Animals

I. KEYWORDS:
1. Biodiversity
2. Fauna
3. Poaching
4. Deforestation
5. Desertification
6. Sanctuaries
7. Vulnerable
8. Migration
9. Monoculture
10.Conservation

II. GIVE REASONS FOR THE FOLLOWING:

1. Monoculturing of a species of flora affects the native flora of that
region.
Monoculture occupies the space of native species when grown in abundance.
They destroy the native species of that region.

2. Sanctuaries protect the species inhabiting it.

Sanctuaries are set aside natural environments or regions to conserve and
protect their inhabitants.
3. There are various zones in the biosphere reserved.
Biosphere reserves and their zones are the sites recognized by IUCN's Man
and Biosphere (MAB) programme to promote the conservation of not only diversity
but also cultural, social and economic development through cooperation and
collaboration between people and nature.

III. DRAW THE FOLLOWING:

1. The zones in a biosphere reserve.

REFERENCE QUESTIONS:
1. Define the following:
a) Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the number, variety and variability of living organisms at a
place at a given point in time.
b) Ecosystem
The interactions between organisms and their environment in a given region form
the ecosystem.
3. GIVE REASONS:
a) One-horned Rhinoceros need to be conserved and protected.
One-horned rhinoceros are vulnerable endangered species and need to be
conserved and protected.

b) Herbal medicine industries affect the biosphere of the forest it

depends on.
Herbal medicine industries would affect the biosphere of the forest it depends
on if the forests are overexploited for raw materials.
2. Explain the significance of biodiversity.
● Biodiversity plays a significant role in maintaining ecological balance.
● It also helps in the survival of humankind and other species present in the
ecosystem.
● It helps in maintaining high productivity and human health.
● Biodiversity has immense economic value. We get food, fuel, fodder, timber,
industrial raw materials etc. directly from biodiversity.
● It helps in the conservation of the food chain, nutrient cycle, etc.
● The benefits of biodiversity include keeping water quality pure. In wetlands, plants will take up
contaminants in water and process and purify the water.
4. Differentiate between a national park and a wildlife sanctuary.

5. ‘Save paper, save trees’. Give reasons.

Paper production majorly depends on cellulose, a material obtained from the bark
and the stem of trees. So, it becomes inevitable to cut the trees for production. But
if we save paper, that will reduce the destruction of trees.
We can save paper by doing the following steps:
● We should use the leftover pages from the notebooks of previous years for
writing.
● Recycling paper can save a lot of trees.
● Old newspapers may be used in the production of tissue paper, packaging
materials and writing paper.
