Specification
the Engineer to perform tests specified herein during earthwork
Division 330000,
operations as well as the additional tests performed to
Sec 331411
determine the quality of work.
A2 Percentage of Maximum Density Requirements: Compact soil to
not less than the following percentages of maximum density, in
accordance with ASTM D 1557: under pavements, compact top
300 mm of subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material at
95 Percent maximum density.

A3 Under lawn or unpaved areas, compact the top 150 mm of Project

subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material at 90 percent Specification
maximum density. Division 330000,
Sec 331411
A4 Under walkways, compact the top 150 mm of subgrade and
each layer of backfill/fill material at 95 percent maximum
density.

A5 Project
Moisture control: Where the subgrade or layer of soil material
Specification
must be moisture conditioned before compaction, uniformly
Division 330000,
apply water to the surface of the subgrade or layer of soil
Sec 331411
material. Apply water in minimum quantity as necessary to
prevent free water from appearing on the surface during or
subsequent to compaction operations.
A6 Place backfill and fill soil materials in layers not more than 200
mm in loose depth for material compacted by heavy
compaction equipment, and not more than 100 mm in loose
depth for material compacted by hand-operated tampers.

A7 Project
Nuclear density gauges, when used, shall have a valid Specification
calibration certificate per the requirement of ASTM D2922. Division 330000,
Sec 331411
A8
Place backfill and fill materials evenly adjacent to structures,
piping, or conduit to required elevations. Prevent wedging
action of backfill against structures or displacement of piping or
conduit by carrying material uniformly around structure, piping,
or conduit to approximately the same elevation in each lift.
A10 Project
At footing subgrades, at least one test of each soil stratum will Specification
be performed to verify design-bearing capacities. Subsequent Division 330000,
verification and approval of other footing subgrades may be Sec 331411
based on a visual comparison of subgrade with tested subgrade
when approved by the Engineer

A11 Project
Borrow material shall comply with the requirements specified Specification
for Backfill and Fill Materials. Borrow material shall be subject Division 330000,
