UNIT 2: Energy and energy resources

GLOBAL CONTEXT: Scientific and technical innovation
Exploration: Systems, models, methods; products,
processes and solutions

Name: Date:
SOI- Understanding heat exchange and energy transfer in substances may lead to better
solutions in environmental and global issues.
Learning Goal : Apply the understanding of different forms of energy to complete the
worksheet

Energy Transfer

Energy Example
Thermal Heat from a fire
Light Light from a light bulb
Sound Sound from a plane taking off
Elastic Stretching a rubber band
Gravitational Standing at the top of a hill
Kinetic Running a 100m race
Electrical Electricity within your house
Chemical Chemical energy of a battery
Nuclear Nuclear fission occurring at power plants

Energy can be changed from one form to another.

Examples:

1. Chemical energy in food is converted to thermal energy and kinetic energy by our bodies.
2. Gravitational energy in a ball is converted to kinetic energy when it falls to the ground.

What are the energy transfers for the following objects?

 A match burning
 A portable torch
 A microphone
 A radio
 A TV
 A catapult
 A car

Remember that in all transfers energy is conserved. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy is
measured in Joules (J).

Energy transfer diagrams like the one below are also known as Sankey diagrams.
