Verification
of the
Formula
For
Area of a Circle
20
Circle
A circle is the locus of a point which moves in a plane in such a way
that its distance from a fixed point remains constant.
The fixed point is called the centre and the constant distance is called
the radius of the circle.
Objective: To verify the formula for the area of a circle.
Materials Required: (a) Two sheets of plain paper
(b)Two different colour pencils
(c) A geometry box
(d) A pair of scissors
(e) Glue
(Left side first diagram) 21
Related Theory: From geometry we have,
Area of a circle of radius r is given by, sq.units.

Area of rectangle of length and breadth is given by,

A= sq.units.

Procedure:
1. Take two sheets of papers, draw a circle with any convenient
radius (r units).
2. Now divide both the circles into 16 pieces, with the help of scale
and protractor.
3. After dividing it, colour them with two different colours
alternatively, shown in fig 1.
4. Now, one of the circles should be cut into 16 pieces with scissors.
5. Using those 16 pieces, make it in a rectangle shape, shown in
fig.2, and find the area of it using the formula.
22
(Left side second diagram)
Observations and calculations:
We observe that the arrangement in fig. 1 closely resembles a
rectangle whose length is approximately equal to units (ie. half
the circumference of the circle in fig. 2) and breadth is
approximately equal to r units (ie. radius of the circle).

Therefore, length, =

= units.

And, breadth, = radius of circle, units.

Therefore, area of rectangle = = = .

i.e. Area of circle = Area of rectangle = square units.

Result:
It is verified that area of the circle (A) of a radius (r), is given by :
A= square units.
