GRAMMAR
WOULD RATHER

Is used to express a preference in English.

a) would rather = would prefer


b) to either state / ask for preference

EXAMPLE:
I would rather go out for dinner.
which would you rather write about?
HAD BETTER

Had better is also used to give advice. HOWEVER,

a) the advice is stronger


b) the topic of advice is more urgent
c) the person who gives advice has more power and authority
d) the advice often means a warning

EXAMPLE:
You had better take your umbrella, otherwise you will get wet.
SHOULD / OUGHT TO

To give advice and personal opinion

a)"ought to" is similar to "should" in meaning,


b) but it is considered to be more formal and is used less
frequently in spoken English.

EXAMPLE:
You should take your umbrella
You ought to take your umbrella
