DATA ANALYSIS
I. Introductory Concept
Do you still remember your lesson on Descriptive Statistics in Quarter 4 Module
Week 2? You learned that there are two types of descriptive statistics, namely: a.
Measure of Central Tendency (the Mean, Median and Mode), and b. Measure of
Dispersion.

In order to describe fully a distribution, it is necessary to present the mean or any

of the measure of central tendency. To give more meaning to this measures, there is
another measure of spread, more popularly known as Measures of Dispersion or
Measure of Variation composed of the range, average deviation, standard deviation,
quartile deviation and variance.

Let’s tackle Measure of Dispersion specifically the Standard Deviation.

SD or Standard Deviation- is a statistical measure of how much values in a data set vary
from the mean.
Formula:

√ ∑ ( X−x̄ )
2

SD=
n−1
Where:
SD : Standard Deviation
∑ (X-x̄) 2 : sum of squares of X minus the mean, x̄
n : sample size

SD=√ s 2
Where:
SD : Standard Deviation
2
S : Sample Variance
Example:

X /X- x̄/ (X- x̄)2

11 3 9
8 0 0
12 4 16
7 -1 1
5 -3 9
3 -5 25
4 -4 16
15 7 49
9 1 1
6 -2 4
∑X= 80 ∑/X- x̄/ = 30 ∑ (X- x̄)2 =130
n= 10

First, Sum the X, in this case the sum of X is 80, to be divided to sample size (n) which is
10.
∑X / n should be 80/10= 8

Second, Subtract 8 on each variables of X, in this case 11-8= 3, 8-8 = 0, 12-8 = 4 and so
forth and get its sum. This should be ∑/X- x̄/ = 30.

Third, squared each variables of X minus the mean, in this case 3 squared= 9, 0 squared=
0, 4 squared=16 and so forth the get its sum. This should be ∑ (X- x̄)2 =130.

Now you can use the SD equation.

√ ∑ ( X−x̄ )
2

SD=
n−1

130
SD=
10−1

130
SD=
9

SD=√ 14.44

SD= 3.8
