WELCOME
ON BOARD PROFLIGHT

I
t is with great pleasure that I welcome you on board Proflight Zambia as you proceed to one of our twelve destinations
(nine within Zambia and three international which are Lilongwe, Durban and Harare).

In our last issue of the Nkwazi in-flight magazine I promised to talk more about the aviation industry in Zambia and
in particular about the former Zambia Airways. Zambia Airways came about after the cessation of the Federation of
Rhodesia and Nyasaland and subsequent dissolution of the Central African Airways (CAA) in the early 1960s. Zambia got
three De Havilland DHC2 Beaver single engine aircraft with a capacity of eight passengers, and four twin engine DC3 Dakota
aircraft which were operated on domestic routes. The Zambian government later purchased two twin engine jet aircraft
from the British Aircraft Corporation – the BAC 1-11 which were used on the Ndola route and onto Nairobi, Dar es Salaam,
Blantyre and Mauritius. Airline management contracts were undertaken by Alitalia of Italy who introduced the DC8 -63 four
jet engine intercontinental aircraft that was used on Lusaka direct to London, Rome and Frankfurt in Germany via Larnaca in
Cyprus. Please look for more history in the next issue!

As we approach the festive season and the end of the peak traffic season, I wish to thank you all most sincerely for flying
with Proflight Zambia. Through the continued support of our customers, shareholders, suppliers and all other stakeholders
we have acquired a 50 seat Bombardier Dash- 8 turboprop aircraft that will ease the work load on our 29 seat Jetstream 41
aircraft and provide you, our esteemed customers with a more comfortable travel experience. The Dash 8 aircraft beefs up our
carrying capacity as it supplements our CRJ 50 seat jet aircraft. We look forward to providing you with more comfortable and
faster travel with more seat availability on our upgraded fleet.

In this issue of Nkwazi our business articles focus on the challenges facing Zambia’s innovative SMEs and the opportunities
available to them. Speaking of innovative entrepreneurs, we have an exclusive interview with Savanna Premium Chocolate.
Zambia’s first bean-to-bar chocolate makerw and chocolatier. Our local destination piece is one for the adrenaline junkies
as we focus on the pulse raising adventure activities in Livingstone, aptly named the adventure capital of Southern Africa.
Elsewhere in the region we highlight the stunning Domboshova Hill area, a short drive away from Proflight’s newest
destination, Harare.

It is now my privilege and honour on behalf of our Chief Executive Officer Mr Tony Irwin and his family, the Management Team
and all Proflight members of staff to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year as we look forward to being of
service to you in 2019. Enjoy your flight and happy landing.

Thank you for your continued support.

The only difference now is
they’re called mom shorts (or mum

JOE BILLS
MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY

M
anyando S Kangwanda was born in Lusaka in
1982. He is a licensed alcohol and drug abuse
counsellor and a graduate in mental health
studies. Working under the artistic name Joe
Bills, he is a self-taught photographer. He has
also worked as a filmmaker, choreographer and wedding
videographer for the last ten years.

His love for macro and wildlife photography developed from

childhood with a love for observing the insects, birds and
amphibians around him and from nature books his mother
bought for him. Later, this love was reignited when he stumbled
upon a macro lens and he fully committed himself to developing
his craft and growing his portfolio.

Joe Bills believes nature offers glorious beauty at every scale.

However, most people are not attuned to the fact that rewarding
macro photography can be found close to home. Even the tiniest
pot plant or backyard garden can direct us into fascinating new
worlds, which are inches away but go unnoticed as we pass them
by every day. Joe Bills feels that one of the greatest things about
macro photography is that you don’t have to travel far at all to
get the perfect shot.

It usually involves visiting Times Square, the

there is so much more to New York than Manhattan. A visit to
the underrated borough of Queens should be on the list of any
foodie, art, history or nature lover. Partly due to its unmatched
ethnic and linguistic diversity - more than half of its population
was born outside the US - Queens is one of the most interesting
places to visit in New York.

TASTE THE WINE SHOP

AGEING LIKE FINE WINE
By Marian Chileshe Images courtesy of The Wine Shop and Cassandra Green Photography

I
knew I’d love my time at Taste the Wine
Shop from the moment I arrived. As I
walked down the red carpet I was greeted
by sounds of laughter and music and I was
struck by the incredible outfits I saw.
Multiple wine brands in stalls covered the
grounds of the Bonanza Golf Course where
the event was taking place. My ticket entitled
me to 12 wine tastings and one of the
hardest decisions I had to make was picking
from such a wide selection of excellent
options. The amount of choice available was
overwhelming. My first pick was a South
African wine, Faithful Hound, which had
a bold, rich flavour. Whiskey lovers were
not left out with brands including Chivas
and Jameson being part of the event. Also
available were various gins, local beers,
craft beers and organic food. Besides wine
I sampled some delicious wraps and other
yummy bites.

In the crowd I spotted singer Salma Sky

who looked gorgeous as always with her
cute baby bump. She was sipping on some
ginger ale and having the time of her life.
Not only was there a big crowd, it was also
an inclusive crowd filled with different races,
age groups and people from various walks of
life. They all had one thing in common and
that was they were all having fun, brought
together by great wine, good food and a
musical lineup to get anyone on their feet.
Later Kuni hopped onto the stage with one of
his fabulous kimonos and graced us with his
beautiful voice and dance moves, which had
his long hair swinging along to the rhythm.
As soon as his set was over Becky took to
the stage and got everyone dancing as she
sang a cover of Bruno Mars’ ‘Finesse.’ It was
impossible to keep my feet still and when I
looked around I saw that I was not the only
one moved by the music. The crowd just kept
getting bigger and bigger and nothing could
kill the vibe.
However, it’s not all about the crowd but the
quality of the event and after five years The
Wine Shop has it down to an art. Like wine
they are getting better with age.

I began to think about how to take advantage of my
two and a half hour daily break and learn something to you the very best for the
complement my yoga course. I decided on Ayurveda.

My first encounter with Ayurveda was about five years new year
ago in Berlin. I was at a very confusing time in my life,
filled with worry. An Indian friend of mine had come to
visit and she was shocked at the sight of me. My usually
clear skin was rough and dry and my lively eyes had
become dull. My friend introduced me to a few Ayurvedic
therapies I could use to help treat my skin, such as
turmeric and yoghurt paste. She showed me a few spices
I could use in my cooking, such as asafoetida or hing, and
advised me to look into Ayurveda as a way to manage my
diet and reduce toxins and waste materials in the body.

During my introduction to Ayurveda in Berlin, I only

managed to scratch the surface of this comprehensive
ancient knowledge. So now in 2018, back in India I
decided this would be the best time to pick it up again. I
found a school and enrolled into an Ayurveda foundation
at the Vedarjana School of Ayurveda. I had daily classes
with Dr Satinder Rusetra and we took the time to delve
into the foundation of a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Here is where it finally clicked. The importance of a
well-functioning waste elimination system is not to be
underestimated. He explained the effects of movement,
change and interruption on our system. For those of us
who love to travel, it is important to factor in the effects
of movement on our bodies ability to digest and absorb
nutrients, just like we factor in diet, location, season and
time of day.

Now imagine how traveling to three continents in four

months has impacted my body. I am writing this article
from Berlin, after having visited Lusaka, Johannesburg,
Rishikesh, New Delhi, London via Nairobi and Mumbai.
I have gained a level awareness that helps to accept
changes in my bowel movement as part and parcel of my
traveling and movement filled lifestyle. As such changes
in location, food, water, seasons, time affect my system,
which is then reflected through skin and hair. In turn,
I have to make some minimal changes such as using www.hlb.global
oils and adding more healthy fats to my diet in order to
lubricate my internal organs and moisturise my skin.
