Preface
EcoDesign has been a core concept for the manufacturing industry in its efforts to
transform the mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal paradigm
toward achieving sustainability. In the last two decades, the ecosystem of the
manufacturing industry has been rapidly changing, especially when we look at
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), circular economy, and digitalization. In
addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed our lifestyles to the
“New Normal,” where a typical example is to shift from working in office to
working from home using a teleconference system. In response to such emerging
needs and enablers, though the impact of COVID-19 has not yet been considered,
the scope of EcoDesign has been expanding to cover more diversified areas, such as
environmentally conscious design of products, services, manufacturing systems,
supply chain, consumption, economies, and society.
This book collates 79 papers out of 205 papers presented at EcoDesign 2019—
the 11th International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and
Inverse Manufacturing, which was held in Yokohama, Japan from November 25 to
27, 2019. All the 79 papers were peer-reviewed by the EcoDesign 2019 Executive
committee. Celebrating the 20 years anniversary of the symposium since its first
occurrence in 1999, EcoDesign 2019 provided the excellent platform to share the
state-of-the-art research and practices in the field of EcoDesign. The total of 278
researchers and practitioners from 28 countries participated in EcoDesign 2019.
The book consists of two volumes, i.e., the first volume focuses on “Products,
Services, and Business Models” and the second volume focuses on “Social
Perspectives and Sustainability Assessment.” Reflecting the expansion of the
symposium scope, the book chapters cover broad areas—product and service
design, business models and policies, circular production and life cycle manage-
ment, green technologies, sustainable manufacturing, sustainable design and user
behavior, sustainable consumption and production, ecodesign of social infrastruc-
ture, sustainability education, sustainability assessment and indicators, and energy
system design. We believe that the methods, tools, and practices described in the
chapters are useful for readers to facilitate value creation for sustainability.

During sixty year’s history of industrial design field in Japan, the promotion of envi-
ronmental concern and ecology in design field was focused initially on the activities
related to the design competitions. Only in the early 90 s through the symposiums and
seminars, the terms like ecodesign, green design, design for environment and more
recently sustainable design came to be considered in the design academic fields
(Japan Design Foundation 1989; Green Designing in Yamagata 1992; Ecodesign
1999).
The term ecological design in the Dictionary of Today’s Design (Katsui et al.
1992) was introduced in the year 1992, after many ecological design events like: the
second and third International Design Competition Osaka (IDCO) with the themes
water and fire. IDCO was a biannual international design competitions that covered
all areas of design and served to redefine the role played by design while presenting a
concrete vision of better future for manking (Japan Design Foundation (JDF) 1987,
1989).
This research explores the sustainability aspects of design concepts related to the
theme of the element of nature water and fire, submitted by industrial designers
from around the world to the respected International Design Competition, Osaka
(IDCO), which is supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and
Industry (METI). These design concepts are studied and compared.
The Japan Design Foundation (JDF) coordinated this unique and original theme
of water and fire (Japan Design Foundation (JDF) 1987, 1989). Analysis of these
design concepts offers a point of study and understanding for the relationship between
the theme of water and fire and their respective design categories and ecodesign
strategies, as well as their social, cultural and environmental dimensions.
The choice to examine design concepts of the water and fire themes from the IDCO
are justified because these themes were a unique and original reference for the global
history of design. Their importance are recognized in international dictionaries of
design (the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Design (Woodham 2006) and Japanese
Dictionary of Today’s Design (Katsui et al. 1992)).
The global history of industrial design has no similar event or activity. Its original
“Design for Every Being” concept, its international scale, the number of participating
designers from around the world, and its historical importance to the Japanese design

and global design justify detailed review and study of submitted design concepts for
the benefit of current and future professional industrial designers.
From an academic perspective, no similar or specific research has examined the
elements of nature water and fire competition from an industrial design perspec-
tive, even in the papers published from 1999 to 2013 by the International Sympo-
sium on EcoDesign (Ecodesign Symposium 1999) and in the special, environmen-
tally focused issues from Japanese Society for Science of Design—JSSD (Japanese
Society for Science of Design—JSSD 1997; JSSD 2011).
Given the facts, the sustainability aspects of design concepts are examined from the
industrial design perspectives. An inventory of sustainable design strategies from
viewpoints of industrial designers are considered in their concepts. They are formu-
lated based on the three sustainability dimensions: social, cultural and environmental.
To do so, the tools available for industrial designers are extensively reviewed, with
the most relevant found to be the ecodesign strategies. Special reports (Japan Design
Foundation (JDF) 1987, 1989) of IDCO contribute to the analysis of the submitted
design concepts.
Concept design works are analyzed based on the Ecodesign Strategy by Brezet
(Brezet and val Hemel 1997), which is useful at both the early and late stages of
the product-development process, including for re-evaluation after improvements.
The strategy, which helps to identify on which areas to prioritize, is based on the
lifecycle, which is a technical approach.
New factors and elements of evolution are adapted in this research to analyze the
design concepts in order to explore the new characteristics that the early stage of
design development commonly explores.
These factors and elements were found through the review of each design work
by the author and also by two Phd experts in Ecodesign.
Each design works were reviewed based on the description as the title and subtitle
and also the contents summarized with 300 words by the design author. The design
categories of each design work were also defined by the design author through choice
options of IDCO application form, e.g.: (A) poster, (B) Transportation, lighting and
others (C) Furniture, toys and others (D), Urban Planning, Landscape and others
(E) Design research and others. These design categories were based on the recom-
mended by the ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associa-
tion), the ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and the IFI

Tables 1.2 and 1.3 summarize the basic sustainability dimensions; (a) social dimen-
sion; (b) cultural dimension and (c) environmental dimension of water and fire
themes. The main keywords of each dimension came from the analysis (quality
and quantity) of description each design concept selected by ten international jurors
that represented the IDCO. The description of each design works included: 300-word
comments by authors, dimensional drawing, and photos of prototypes.
1.3.3 Terms
To enable consensus around the keywords used in this research, the following terms
are described.
(a) Design concept
The early phase of a product during the process of its development, involving func-
tions created to fulfill customer needs and forms and behaviors created to realize
those functions. Industrial designers have the freedom to generate and explore ideas
without constraint by the parameters of the later stages of design (Takala et al. 2006).

Summarizing the characteristics of the product design concepts based on the themes
water and fire in Figs. 1.1 and 1.2, we can note that industrial designers had more
possibilities and flexibility to propose innovative or new concept design in their
respective fields of acting.
According to the Sect. 5.2, in both themes industrial designers focused on equip-
ments field, which the reduction of environmental impact during the use of product
was characterized by the following elements: products that not emit toxic substance
and waste, any energy consumption and cleaner use. Methods of the utilization the
nature and reuse of product from optimization of the end-of-life systems were also
noted by designers in their works.
The products design from water theme were formed by common elements of
evolution, like methods of utilizing the nature, non consumption energy, cleaner use,
not emit toxic substances and wastes and so on.
Industrial designers showed familiarity with exploration of resources of water,
e.g.: production of food using seawater and the sun.
While in the fire theme was characterized by equipments that produce and
consume energy. In other words, the theme fire in the majority of entry works was
interpreted by industrial designers as protection and prevention from accidents caused
by fire and energy production through sunlight.

1.6 Conclusions
designers considered only the element not emit waste and toxic substances, showing
basic knowledge and concern about the lifecycle principle. The production phase
was few considered by industrial designers.
From the general view of 44 product design concepts with fire theme, the majority
of design concepts implemented the ecodesign strategies as new concept development
(29.4%) and use phase (45.1%), which they were represented by the category of active
products.
Other ecodesign strategies as selection of materials (7.8%), production phase
(7.8%) and end-of-life (9.8%) stages had low consideration by industrial designers.
During the use phase of these products, the non-renewable energy consumption were
most common. The fire design concepts with a cultural dimensions were characterised
as lighting and cooking design fields, while the social dimension were characterised
as safe emergency and protection design fields. Finally, the environmental dimension
concepts were characterised as new method of energy production through sunlight.
Unfortunately the JDF has closed its activities in 2008, which the theme “Water”
was not realized for second time, and also a specific main theme with “Water”
approach has not been proposed by others national and international design compe-
titions from 1989 until at the present moment. These facts did not permit up-to-date
of design works with water theme by industrial designers (Woodham 2006; Ecode-
sign Symposium 1999; Japanese Society for Science of Design—JSSD 1997; JSSD
2011).
Based on the main findings of the previous sections, examples of main strategies
design concept based on the water and fire themes are illustrated in Table 1.7. It
shows the examples of key characteristics of products design with water and fire
themes from social, cultural and environmental viewpoints. These examples could
to stimulate industrial designers to explore new way of generation ideas to intigate
new sustainable design solution. This proposal will be tested in the practical modules
of the industrial design course.

In future research, a more detailed and specific inventory of sustainable design strate-
gies in each theme and category of products is needed to identify new features for
more innovative sustainable product design.
This inventory could support and facilitates industrial designers to demonstrate
their potential creativity and innovation skill during the conceptualization or idea
generation process stage of a sustainable product development.

Abstract Time axis design is a design method with which a designer considers
temporal changes of social situation, surrounding environment of design objects,
users (including their values), and design objects. Although some products were
designed with considering temporal changes, the concept of time axis design is not
well organized until now. For clarifying the basic concepts of time axis design, this
paper first illustrates cases of time axis design and extracts indispensable elements
of time axis design. Second, this paper proposes a time axis design support method.
Third, as a case study, this paper illustrates time axis design of umbrella. As a result,
this paper shows that the proposed design method is effective in stimulating a designer
for deriving design ideas.
2.1 Introduction
Since the current manufacturing paradigm cannot get out of the mass production and
mass consumption in correspondence with diversification and expansion of customer
needs, today’s manufacturing industry causes many problems such as sustainability
issues typified by SDGs (United Nations 2015). The conventional design theory
used in today’s manufacturing is not sufficient for these problem because it does not
concern about our values to products. For solving this problem, we study “time axis
design,” which explicitly deals with temporal changes in design (Matsuoka 2012).
Design objects designed with the time axis design can respond to temporal changes.
By introducing the view of time axis in design object, the designer can correspond
with the changes of value we do not expect now. However, at present the concept of
time axis design is not organized well.
The objective of this paper is to clarify the concept of time axis design and propose
a method of time axis design applicable to various products. In this paper, we describe
a method to find out time axis design solutions based on collected cases of time axis
design.
The rest of this paper is structured as follows. Section 2.2 describes the role of
time axis design for eco-design. Section 2.3 summarizes research efforts on time axis
design. Section 2.4 describes cases of time axis design cases. Section 2.5 proposes
time axis design method based on the collected cases. Section 2.6 shows a case study
of time axis design. Section 2.7 discusses the effectiveness and challenges of the
proposed method. Section 2.8 concludes the paper.
