Comprehensive Examination of Summer Semester 2021
Program: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE)

Course No.: CEN 496 Time: 3 hrs

Course Title: Comprehensive Examination Full Marks: 100
Section: A Date: 30.09.2021
There are 20 (twenty) questions. Answer all the questions. Marks allocated are indicated in the
right margin. Assume reasonable value of any data if not provided. Unless otherwise stated, the
symbols bear usual meaning.

1. Briefly discuss the applications of modulus of elasticity of materials with an example. [05]
2. In designing concrete structures, normally maximum aggregate sizes are adopted with [05]
ranges from 10mm to 20mm. Does an increase of maximum aggregate size benefit the
structures?
3. Make a flow chart of working procedure of Standard Penetration Test (SPT). [05]
4. A plot was measured by an Engineer's chain exactly 100 ft. in length at the beginning. [05]
But it was found to be 100.25 ft. long at the end of the survey work. The area of the plot
drawn to a scale of 1 inch = 100 ft. was 25.50 sq. inches. Find the true area of the plot.
5. Demonstrate a typical stress strain graph for mild steel and describe all the components [05]
of it.
6. Differentiate between normally consolidated and over consolidated soil. [05]
7. Discuss the types of pavement and Give description on the layers and coats inside a [05]
conventional flexible pavement
8. Explain one-way and two way eccentrically loaded foundation with a schematic diagram. [05]
9. Describe the slump test of concrete and explain how the w/c ratio affects the workability [05]
of concrete.
10. For residential building project, draw a work breakdown structure (WBS), and briefly [05]
discuss how WBS is going to help the Project Manager.

11. State the differences between fast tracking and crashing of a project. [05]
12. Mention the measures may be taken for the sustainable management of air pollution in [05]
Dhaka city,
13. Explain corner reinforcements in two-way slabs and the ACI provisions for corner [05]
reinforcements.
14. Describe Influence Line (IL) and explain the difference between Influence lines for [05]
determinate and indeterminate structures.

15. Discuss Moment-Distribution Method and method of consistent deformations and which [05]
method you would chose for BMD of indeterminate structures and why?
16. Sketch an indeterminate but unstable beam and explain [05]
17. Sketch a horizontal curve of a highway where the entry grade is (p − 9)% and exit grade [05]
(p − 7)% . Show different design points on the curve.
[Here, p = last 2 digits of your ID]
18. Consider a statically determinate beam, which is having a point load and a uniformly [05]
distributed load. You can assume the value and location of loads. However, you must
consider the length of the beam is (10+X) ft, where X= last two digits of your student ID.
For the prescribed beam, sketch the shear force and bending moment diagram.
19. Discuss physical, chemical, and biological treatment process of wastewater. [05]
20. Determine the forces CD, CG and HG of the following truss. [05]
