1. INTRODUCTION
❑ Ecologically sustainable and environmentally safe management of crop
residue (agricultural waste) is one of the major challenges in India.
❑ Harvesting, threshing and primary processing of crops leave behind a
variety of plant materials that need safe disposal and recycling.
❑ A large portion of the crop residues are burnt in the field primarily to
clear the field after the harvest of the preceding crop for the sowing of
next crop.
❑ Burning these crop residue causes phenomenal pollution problems in
the atmosphere and huge nutritional loss and physical health
deterioration to the soil.
❑ Crop residues burning is a potential source of Green House Gases
(GHGs) and other chemically and radiative important trace gases and
aerosols such as CH4, CO, N2O, NOX, and other hydrocarbons.
❑ The focus of government in recent times has been on effective
management of crop residue. The following are some of the popular
methods of ……

field. While lowering the danger of pests and diseases, in-

and fertility of the soil.
2. ex-situ

refers to the removal of agricultural waste from the field for

use as compost, firewood, or animal feed.
2. BODY PART-1 APPROACHES TO CRM
1. Mulching: leaving crop residue on the soil surface to protect the soil from
erosion and retain moisture; helps to suppress weeds and provides nutrients
to the soil.
1. in-situ 2. No-till farming: planting crops without disturbing the soil. Crop residue is
2. ex-situ left on the soil surface, and seeds are planted through it; helps to conserve
soil moisture and reduce soil erosion.
3. Strip-till farming: involves tilling only a narrow strip of soil where the seeds
will be planted. Crop residue is left on the soil surface in between the tilled
strips; helps to conserve soil moisture and reduce soil erosion while also
providing a suitable environment for seed germination.
2. BODY PART-1 APPROACHES TO CRM
1. Biomass power generation: burning crop residues to produce electricity or
heat.
2. Animal feed: particularly for livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats.
1. in-situ Crop residues can be baled and stored for use as animal feed during the
2. ex-situ dry season when forage is scarce.
3. Composting: involves collecting the crop residues and mixing them with
other organic materials such as manure, leaves, and grass clippings. The
compost can then be used to improve soil fertility and structure.
4. Biochar production: Biochar is a type of charcoal that is produced by
heating crop residues in the absence of oxygen. Biochar can be used as a
soil amendment to improve soil fertility, water retention, and crop
productivity.
5. Industrial uses: such as the production of paper, textiles, and building
materials.

4.WAY FORWARD
• Despite the availability of various methods of crop residue management, a large
chunk of crop residue is just burnt off.
• Paucity of time with farmers before sowing wheat in the Rabi season, false traditional
belief that burning crop residue will restore nutrients back to the soil, shortage of on
farm labourers, non affordability and non inclination to invest in modern machines are
some of the reasons responsible.
• Optimally utilizing the existing resources and establishing appropriate supply chain
through a cluster-based approach in the vicinity of various industries utilizing the crop
residue will help containing the burning of crop residues in the open fields. Revised
Guidelines for ‘off-site’ crop residue management seem to be promising here.
• Also, no crop residue management solution is preferable in every situation .Designing
the best site-specific solutions for crop residue management practices to increase
agricultural production and sustainability while reducing environmental impacts
requires multidisciplinary and coordinated efforts by a range of scientists and
government with active involvement of the private sector.
