2. After watching the video, answer the given problem below. Write your (complete) solution.
All FINAL answers MUST BE expressed in four significant figures.

Problem :

A world record was set by Andy Green in 1997 when his ThrustSSC exceeded the speed of sound. To
establish this, he made two runs through the course, one in each direction to nullify the wind effect.
He travelled from left to right and covered a distance of 1609 m in 4.740 s. He then reversed his
direction and covered the same distance in 4.695 s. What is his average velocity for each run?

Complete Solution and Answer:

1st Run: Given: m = +1609
s = 4.740
Average velocity = ? +1609 m

4.740 s
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝑚)
Solution: Average velocity (m/s) = 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 (𝑠)
+1609 𝑚
= 4.740 𝑠
= +339.4514768

= +339.5 m/s to the right

2nd Run: Given: m = -1609
s = 4.695
Average velocity = ? +1609 m -1609 m

4.740 s 4.695 s

𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝑚)
Solution: Average velocity (m/s) = 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 (𝑠)
−1609 𝑚
= 4.695 𝑠
= -342.7050053

= - 342.7 m/s to the left
