Instructional Plan in Science 4

Grade Level Four (4) Date: October 11, 2023
Quarter First Quarter
Content The learners demonstrate understanding of changes that materials
Standard undergo when exposed to certain conditions.
Performance The learners should be able to evaluate whether changes in
Standard materials are useful or harmful to one’s environment
Learning Describe changes in properties of materials when mixed with other
Competency materials.
(S4MT-Ig-h-6)
I. Learning The Grade 4 learners are expected to:
Objectives:  Describe what happens to solid materials when mixed with
other solid materials.
 Describe what happens to solid materials when mixed with
liquid materials.
 Describe what happens when two liquid materials are mixed.
II. Subject Changes in the Properties of Materials when Mixed with Other
Matter Materials
A. Concept When two or more materials combine, they either mix or not. When
the solid material is mixed with other solid material and can be
easily distinguished from one another, it is called heteregenous
mixture. If the solids in the mixture cannot be distinguished or
looked the same throughout, it is called homogenous mixture.
B. Materials Audio-visual equipment, video clip, behavioral chart, glass, spoon,
pebbles, salt, flour, cooking oil, vinegar, alcohol, coffee powder and
water
C. References Abutay, et al., (2015). Science 4 Learner's Material. Pasig: Lexicon Press, Inc.

Process skills: observing, investigating, and classifying

Across MAPEH HEALTH, EPP- 3 Food Groups (Go, Glow and Grow
Curriculum Foods)
III. Learning Tasks
DAY 1
A. Engage The teacher will introduce the behavioral chart.

A. Review (What’s the Process?)

Let the pupils identify what process caused the following
materials to change.
1. Water to Ice – Freezing
2. Melted Ice Cream – Melting
3. Burned Wood – Burning
4. Water turned to Vapor – Evaporation
5. Dry Ice Sublimation - Sublimation

B. Motivation (Picture Analysis)

Pauiecan
The teacher will show a picture of fruit salad to the pupils.

Fruit Macaroni Salad

QUESTIONS:
a. Do you know how fruit macaroni salad is prepared?
b. When do you usually prepare a fruit macaroni salad?
c. If you were to prepare salad, what ingredients would you like
to use?
d. Which of the ingredients in the salad will give you energy?
(macaroni)
e. Which of the ingredients will help you grow and become
strong? (milk and cheese)
f. Which of the ingredients will help you fight illnesses and
prevent you from getting sick? (fruits used in the salad)

Across Curriculum:

Tell:
Each of the ingredients used in fruit macaroni salad belongs to a
food group. There are three groups of food. The Go, Grow and
Glow Foods.
For you to understand more about the 3 main food groups, lets
watch the video.

Foods like rice and pasta (macaroni) used in the salad are foods
that will give us carbohydrates and energy. We can move and be
energized if we eat these foods. These foods belong to Go Foods.
Grow Foods, like milk and cheese in the salad will help us grow and
become stronger. While the Glow Foods like the fruits used in the
salad will give us vitamins and nutrients to prevent us from getting
sick and will protect our bodies from illnesses.

Ask:

Why is it important to eat from the three food groups? (different

foods provide different types and amounts of nutrients)

What process caused the fruits/ingredients in the salad to change?

(mixing)

B. Explore A. Collaborative Learning Activity

The pupils will be working on the activity “Mix and Match.”
In this activity,
1. Divide the class into 4 groups
1. Choose a leader in your group to get the materials.
2. Give the instruction on what to do in the activity,
3. Set standards in doing the activity.
 Handle the materials properly.
 Use gloves and face mask.
 Do not play with the materials.
 Clean as you go.
Activity: Mix and Match

Present the guide question to the pupils.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the solid materials that dissolved when mixed with
the liquid materials?
2. What are the solid materials that did not dissolve when
mixed with liquid materials?

Task Card
Materials when Mixed with Other Materials
Materials:
Spoon, plastic cup, pebbles, water, salt, flour, cooking oil,
pepper, vinegar, alcohol, coffee powder

Procedure:
a. Get a clear plastic cup.
b. Using the plastic spoon, mix/combine solid materials with the
liquid materials listed in the table.
c. After mixing the materials, observe what happens.
d. On the working sheet, record your observations on the table
checking the proper column. Write down also the changes
you observed when solid and other materials are mixed and
combined.

Questions:
1. What are the solid materials that dissolved when mixed with
the liquid materials?
_____________________________________

2. What are the solid materials that did not dissolve when
mixed with liquid materials?
_____________________________________

(Skills: Observing, comparing)

C. Explain
Tell: Now, we will see the results of our activity.
1. Let each group to present their data.
2. Teacher will process the activity and check the pupils’
output.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS:
a. In our activity earlier, what are the materials that were not
dissolve in the liquid material? (Tiny stones or pebbles, flour,
pepper and ginger)
b. Why did they not dissolve in the liquid material? (the
answers may vary)

c. What are the materials that were dissolved in the liquid

material when they were mixed? (salt and coffee powder)

d. Which mixed/combined materials can be easily

identified/distinguished from one another? (tiny stones, flour,
pepper, ginger)
e. Which mixed/combined materials cannot be distinguished
from each other and looked the same all throughout the
mixture? (salt, coffee powder)
f. Why do these mixtures looked the same all throughout and
the materials mixed in the solution cannot be distinguished?
(The materials were broken down or dissolved in the liquid
materials when they were mixed.)
Tell:

When two or more materials combine, they either mix or not. When
the solid material is mixed with other solid material and can be
easily distinguished from one another, it is called heterogenous
mixture. If the solids in the mixture cannot be distinguished or
looked the same throughout, it is called homogeneous mixture.

When two or more materials blend, it is called a Solution. Solid

materials that dissolve or mix into liquids are called Soluble
materials. Those materials that do not dissolve or mix are known
as Insoluble materials.

D. Elaborate A. Pupil-Teacher Interaction
Teacher will ask the following questions to solidify the concepts by
asking the following questions:

1. What do we call a mixture when the solid material is mixed with

other solid material and can be easily identified or distinguished?
(heterogenous mixture)

2. What do we call a mixture when solids in the mixture cannot be

identified or distinguished and looked the same all throughout the
mixture? (homogeneous mixture)

3. Why homogeneous mixture looks the same all throughout

mixture and the solid materials in it cannot be identified or
distinguished? (the solid material in the liquid dissolved)

4. What do we call two or more materials that blend? (Solution)

5. What do we call solid materials that dissolve or mix into liquids?

(Soluble materials)

6. What do we call the materials that do not mix or dissolve?

(Insoluble materials)
NOTE: Teachers will supply the answer if the pupils cannot give
the correct answer.

B. EXTENSION ACTIVITY
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if
it is incorrect.

_______1. Solid materials can either mix or do not mix in liquids.

_______2. Sand can be dissolved in water.
_______3. In mixing salt and vinegar, salt serves as the
dissolving material.
_______4. Solid materials are easy to handle.
_______5. Liquid and Solid materials have the same
characteristics.

E. Evaluation I. Directions: Identify if the given mixture is heterogenous or

homogeneous mixture.

1. Grapes and slices of apple ________________

2. Dust and dirt ____________________
3. Baking soda and all-purpose flour ____________
4. Thumbtacks and needles _______________
5. White sugar and iodized salt ___________

Assignment List down five drinks/juices or beverages which two or more liquids
materials show homogenous mixture. Give the liquid materials
used.
