Instructional Plan in Science 4

Grade Level Four (4) Date: January 10, 2024
Quarter Second Quarter
Content The learners demonstrate understanding of plants have body parts
Standard that make them adapt to land or water
Performance The learners should be able to construct a prototype model of
Standard organisms that has body parts which can survive in each
environment.
Learning Identify the specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic plants.
Competency (S4LT-IIe-f-9)
I. Learning The Grade 4 learners are expected to:
Objectives:  Identify the specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic
plants.
 Describe the specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic
plants.
II. Subject Specialized Structures of Terrestrial and Aquatic Plants
Matter
A. Concept Specialized structures are important to plants to adapt to their
environment. We can choose and identify plants to grow in a
particular habitat because of their characteristics.
B. Materials euphorbia, rose, bougainvillea, oregano, magnifying glass, pictures
of plants with specialized structures, short clips of aquatic plants,
behavioral chart
C. References Abutay, et al., (2015). Science 4 Learner's Material. Pasig: Lexicon Press, Inc.

Process skills: observing, classifying, inferring, differentiating, communicating

Across EPP- Agriculture
Curriculum Mga Uri at Pakinabang ng Halamang Ornamental
III. Learning Tasks
A. Engage
Introduce the behavioral chart.

Say:
Let’s play a game.
Introduce the game and its mechanics.
The title of our game is “What is it? Plant Edition”. I will flash a
picture puzzle and you will guess the name of the plant. Clues will
be given.

1. It lives in the garden. It has wide red colored petals. Insects

keep on visiting it. What plant is it? (gumamela)
2. It lives in the water. It has light, spongy stalks that enable it
to float. What plant is it? (water hyacinth)
3. It is a fruit tree. Its fruit is the main ingredient for the famous
and delicious dessert called Mango Float. What plant is it?
(mango)

Pauiecan
4. It has a bitter taste but nutritious. What plant is it?
(ampalaya)
5. People call this a “tree of life” because all its parts can be
used for different purposes. What plant is it? (coconut)

Motivation
Ask:

Do you have a garden or plants at home? Can you name the plants
you have in your house? Do you have plants with stems that have
thorns or spikes? Do you have plants with wide and big leaves? Do
you have plants with stems that have tiny hair?

B. Explore A. Collaborative Learning Activity

1. Ask the pupils to bring out the plants which were assigned to
them.
2. Instruct the pupils to work in their designated areas.
3. Ask the pupils to fill in and complete the table.

Activity: What makes it different?

rose
bougainvillea
oregano
water lily
cabbage

4. Give precautionary measures to follow, especially in touching

hairy and thorny plants.
5. Let the pupils present their output.

(Skills: Observing, Comparing)

C. Explain Ask the following questions:
 What plants did you observe? (rose, bougainvillea, oregano)
 Did you see plant parts that are different from other parts?
(Yes)
 What have you noticed on the stems of roses and
bougainvillea? (The stems of rose and bougainvillea have
thorns)
 What have you noticed on the stem of oregano? (The stem
of oregano has tiny hairs on its stem)
 Were you able to see the tiny hairs in the stem of the
oregano? What did you use? (Magnifying glass)
 Why should you not touch with your bare hands the stems of
the oregano? (It may cause irritation when touched with bare
hands)
 What are the different specialized structures of terrestrial
plants that we have studied? (thorns and hairs) Do all plants
have hairs and thorns?
Thorns and hairs are just some of the specialized

Pauiecan
structures of terrestrial plants. Not all plants have hairy
and thorny stems.
 What are the aquatic plants that you have observed?
(hyacinth, lotus, and water lily)
 What did you notice with the leaves of the hyacinth, lotus,
water lily? (They have wide and flat leaves)
 Why do you think they have wide and flat leaves? (These
leaves help them float in the water)
 How about their roots? (They have long roots)
 Why do they have long roots? (So that they can reach the
soil under the water)
Long roots and wide leaves are just some of the
specialized structures of aquatic plants for them to float
in the water.
 Why do you think these specialized structures of plants such
as hairs, thorns, flat leaves, and long roots are important?
(These structures help them survive and adapt in their
environment)
D. Elaborate 1. Say:
Aside from the plants that we have learned, there are different
plants with specialized structures. Let us read the following
information about terrestrial and aquatic plants.

Plants Specialized Structures

Marang, Durian They have fruits with odor
Kalumpang Tree Noted for unpleasant smell of flowers yet
attract flies to pollinate
Bird of Paradise It has a thick cuticle that filter strong light
and guards against excessive water loss.
Talahib, Cogon It has a sharp leaf that might cause you
harm.
Pineapple It has spines on their leaves.
Cactus It has fleshy stems to conserve water for a
long time.
Citrus Plants Their leaves and fruits have strong smelling
oils that have unpleasant taste.

Generalization

Special Structure are important to plants to adapt to their

environment. We can choose and identify plants to grow in a
particular habitat because of their characteristics.

Across Curriculum:
2. Ask:
How plants help us humans and our environment? (Plants
give us food, some plants are used for beautification and
landscaping, some plants protect us from calamities, and the
most important thing is it gives off oxygen for us to breathe).
One way to help us and our environment is by planting trees.
As a child you can start by simply planting a plant like
ornamental plants in your front and backyard or in your
garden. Do you know what are ornamental plants? Let’s

watch this video about ornamental plants and

The teacher will show a short video about ornamental plants.
