RNAV

ADVANCED NAVIGATION TERMS:

FOR 2014 AND BEYOND...

UNDERSTANDING THE DEFINITIONS

RNAV = AREA NAVIGATION
(RNAV is not necessarily associated with satellites, but PBN = PERFORMANCE BASED NAVIGATION: Area
satellites enhance accuracy of our systems) navigation based on performance requirements for aircraft

HARDER
operating along an ATS route, on an instrument approach
GNSS = GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM: procedure or in a designated airspace
EASY

standard generic term for satellite navigation systems

RNP = REQUIRED NAVIGATION PERFORMANCE: a
GPS = GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM: space-based statement of the navigation performance accuracy
navigation system developed by USA necessary for operation within a defined airspace

GLONASS = GLOBALNAYA NAVIGATSIONNAY RNP SYSTEM = Area navigation system which supports
SPUTNIKOVAYA SISTEMA: Russian space-based on-board performance monitoring and alerting
navigation system (Russian equivalent of GPS)

OLDER MORE DEFINITIONS NEWER

RNAV SYSTEM: RNP SYSTEM:
Area navigation system that allows the aircraft to
operate on any desired flight path within the RNAV = SAFETY Area navigation system which supports on-board
performance monitoring and alerting.
coverage of ground or airspace-based navigation
aids or within the limits of the capability of
self-contained navigation aids or a combination of
both. An RNAV system may be included as part of VNAV - Vertical Navigation
a flight management system (FMS)

BARO-VNAV - Barometric
Vertical Navigation: a navigation
system that presents to the pilot
LNAV - Lateral Navigation DECREASE IN AIR SAFETY REPORTS computed vertical guidance
referenced to a specified vertical
path angle (VPA), nominally 3°
B-RNAV - ‘Basic-RNAV’: Old
terminology – now replaced by the RNP-AR - Required Navigation
term ‘RNAV5’
RNAV
Performance – Authorisation
Required: a procedure considered
by a regulatory authority to require
P-RNAV - ‘Precision-RNAV’: Old special aircraft and/or crew
terminology – now replaced by the authoristation, using a defined set
term ‘RNAV1’ of criteria

GROUND AIR SPACE
APPROACH TERMS LET’S GET DOWN ADVANCED
GBAS = Ground-Based Augmentation System
DA = Decision Altitude RF-LEG = A Radius to Fix (RF) leg is defined as a
constant radius circular path around a defined turn
MDA = Minimum Descent Altitude (Emirates is centre that terminates at a fix (used in SIDs, STARs LAAS = Local Area Augmentation System: enables
authorised to treat published MDA as DA... do NOT and Approach) GLS - is supported by Boeing and Airbus
add 50 ft)
APV = Approach with Vertical Guidance WAAS = Wide Area Augmentation System: uses
GLS = GNSS Landing System: integrates satellite satellites to enhance navigation accuracy above GPS
and ground-based navigation information to provide LPV = Localiser Performance with Vertical Guidance (not supported by Boeing or Airbus)
accurate approach guidance (associated with WAAS)
SBAS = Satellite Based Augmentation System WAAS

RNAV BETTER THAN ILS?

RNAV & RNP BENEFITS • No False Localiser or Glidepath
• Increase Safety • Reduce Emissions • No Ground Navaids Required
• Save Time • Save Money • No Localiser Interference by Ground Traffic
• Save Fuel • Reduce Future Training Load • Cheaper to Implement
• Reduce Noise • Increase Compliance • Faster to Implement
• Can Have Curved Paths
