STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

TITLE ABRASIVE CONTROL


PURPOSE Quality control of blast cleaning, Prevention of impurities

1. Make sure the abrasive is not stored in water soaked / improper condition
2. Ensure the batch number carries a Test Certificate from the supplier which
indicates – Specific Gravity, Sieve Size, Hardness & Impurities
3. Ensure the grade is G40.
4. Ensure the blasting pot / input line has a sieve / filter to take-out worn-out
particles (min size 0.5 mm or as recommended by the grit mfr.).

CONDUCTIVITY: ASTM D 4940 / SSPC AB1


5. Verify accuracy of conductivity meter
6. Add 300 ml of distilled water to 300 mg of abrasive
7. Stir 1 minute, Let sit for 8 minutes
PROCEDURE
8. Stir 1 minute, Filter & discard 10 mL
9. Filter remaining liquid as extract.
10. Test conductivity of source water and “extract”
11. Deduct conductivity of source water
12. Acceptance: Maximum 1000µS/cm

OIL & OTHER IMPURITIES: ASTM D 7393 / ‘Vial Test’


13. Take abrasive in a glass jar.
14. Fill tap water 1 inch above the abrasive level.
15. Shake for 1 minute & let it sit for 5 minutes and observe the water color.
16. If dirty water or with Oily Sheen – then the abrasive sample not usable.
