SOLID FIGURES

Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs):

1. Visualizes and describes solid figures. (M5AL-IIIe-25)

2. Makes models of different solid figures: cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, and sphere
using plane figures. (M5AL-IIIe-26)

Background Information
SOLID FIGURES
A solid figure or spatial figure is a three-dimensional figure. It is made up of a plane figure
whose all sides are joined together to form a close figure. Some examples of special figures
include prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders and spheres.

A prism is a polyhedron (three-dimensional figure whose surfaces are polygons) with

exactly two congruent and parallel faces. These faces are called bases. Other faces are called
lateral faces. Some examples of prisms are rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, pentagonal
prisms, hexagonal prisms, etc. The prism is named by its base.

A pyramid is a polyhedron in which one face, also called the base, can be any polygon.
The other faces, also called lateral faces, are triangles that meet at a common vertex. The pyramid
is named by its base.

A cone has a circular base connected to a vertex.

A cylinder has two congruent or equal circular bases that are parallel.

A sphere is a figure with a curved surface in which all points on the surface are of equal
distance from the center.
Nets of Solids
A geometry net is a two-dimensional shape that can be folded to form a three-dimensional
shape or a solid. It is a pattern made when the surface of a three-dimensional figure is laid out
flat showing each face of the figure. A solid have different nets.
