Submission Format
The submission should be in the form of an MS Word document with appropriate use of structure and referencing, as
per the below:
1. Preferred font is Arial and size 10. Heading size can be increased but make sure to keep the same format
3. The first page should have an introduction to the assignment, which should also contain your views.
5. A brief conclusion should be at the end with your comments and views.
6. The last page should have your reference sources. Preferable style - Harvard style. Always make sure to write
sheet.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is defined as the presentation of another person’s work as your own. It is a particular form of cheating.
Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and students who break the rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is
your responsibility to ensure that you understand correct referencing practices. As a university level student, you are
expected to use appropriate references throughout and keep carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials
for material you have used in your work, including any material downloaded from the Internet.
In this be the case, Emirates Aviation University considers plagiarism as theft and any student found to have plagiarised
would be awarded an automatic fail for the piece of work submitted and may be excluded from further study at the
University.

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Behavioural characteristics of engineering components subjected to complex
loading systems.
Q1 – Axial Loading ( 2 marks)
Link BD is made of brass (E = 105 GPa) and has a cross-sectional area of 240 mm2. Link CE is made of
aluminum (E = 72 GPa) and has a cross-sectional area of 300 mm2. Knowing that they support rigid
member ABC, determine the maximum force P that can be applied vertically at point A if the deflection of
A is not to exceed 0.35 mm.
Q2 – Torsion ( 2 marks)
For the gear train shown, the diameters of the three solid shafts are: 𝑑𝐴𝐵 = 20 mm, 𝑑𝐶𝐷 = 25 mm, and
𝑑𝐸𝐹 = 40 mm. Knowing that for each shaft the allowable shearing stress is 60 MPa, determine the largest
torque T that can be applied.

Q3 – Bending (2.5 marks)
The beam shown in Figure 3 is subjected to couples M = 4kN-m. It consists of aluminum alloy with modulus
of elasticity E = 70 GPa. The shape and dimensions of the cross section are shown. Determine:
a) The resulting radius of curvature of the beam’s neutral axis (The origin of the system is taken at the
centroid of the cross-section that is the x-axis is the neutral axis).
b) What is the maximum tensile normal stress, and where does it occur?
c) What is the maximum compressive normal stress, and where does it occur?
For the beam and loading shown in Figure 4, determine the maximum normal stress due to bending on a
transverse section at C.
Use the relations derived in class to draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams i.e. the second method
presented in class.
